Member’s explanatory statement

 

The amendment would provide that the fine for failing to comply with a requirement to make an

 

application to be on the electoral register would be set at £500.

Clause  5,  page  5,  line  15,  at end insert—

 

‘(9)    

Regulations under subsection (2) must require registration officers to include on

 

invitations given under subsection (1)—

 

(a)    

a clear statement to the effect that the edited electoral register is available

 

for general sale and is used by organisations for commercial activities, as

 

well as for other civic purposes; and

 

(b)    

clear instructions on how to opt out of the edited electoral register.’.

Member’s explanatory statement

 

The amendment is intended to ensure that it is clear to people who are invited to apply for regis­

 

tration that the edited register may be sold, and to ensure that people know how to opt out of the
