Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence (Ratification of Convention) Bill

Explanatory Notes

Overview of the Bill

1 The Bill is made up of four clauses and it imposes a duty of Her Majesty’s Government to take all reasonable steps as soon as reasonably practicable to enable the United Kingdom to become compliant with the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (the "Istanbul Convention"). It also requires the Secretary of State to report on the steps required and progress made to enable the UK to ratify the convention and, after ratification, the measures taken by the Government to ensure that the UK remains compliant.
