Prime Minister (Confidence) Bill (HC Bill 370)

Require a Prime Minister to tender their resignation to Her Majesty if the
House of Commons passes a motion of no confidence in them; and for
connected purposes.

Be it enacted by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and
consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present
Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

1 Requirement for Prime Minister to resign if motion of no confidence passed

(1) A Prime Minister must tender their resignation to Her Majesty no later than 14
days after the House of Commons passes a motion in the form set out in
subsection (2).

5The form of motion for the purposes of subsection (1) is—

  • “That this House has no confidence in the Prime Minister.”

2 Extent, commencement and short title

(1) This Act extends to the whole United Kingdom.

(2) This Act comes into force on the day on which it is passed.

(3) 10This Act may be cited as the Prime Minister (Confidence) Act 2019.
