Make provision for election of the BBC Trust Chairman by licence fee payers.
Be it enacted by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and
consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present
Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—
Notwithstanding anything in any enactment or charter the British
Broadcasting Corporation (referred to in this Act as the “BBC”) must put in
place arrangements for individual licence-fee payers to vote in an election for
appointment to the role of Chairman of the BBC Trust.
The Secretary of State may by regulations made by statutory instrument,
subject to annulment in pursuance of a resolution of either House of
Parliament, set out how such an election is to be conducted.
The Secretary of State must recommend the person elected in an election held
under subsection (1) for appointment to the role of Chairman of the BBC Trust.
No person shall be appointed as Chairman of the BBC Trust unless he or she
has been elected in accordance with the provisions of subsection (1).
(1) This Act may be cited as the BBC Trust Chairman (Election) Act 2013.
This Act shall come into force at the end of the current Chairman of the BBC
Trust’s term of office.
