BILL

TO

Limit the period during which a person may be Prime Minister.

Be it enacted by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and
consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present
Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

1 Duty of Prime Minister to resign after holding office for more than two terms
of Parliament

(1) Where subsection (2) applies, the person who holds the office of Prime Minister
on the polling day for a parliamentary general election must, on the following
5day, tender to Her Majesty his or her resignation from that office which will
take effect upon the appointment of another person to the office of Prime
Minister.

(2) This subsection applies where that person—

(a) was appointed to that office before the polling day for the
10parliamentary general election preceding that referred to in
subsection (1); and

(b) has held office continuously since that appointment.

(3) This section applies to the person who holds the office of Prime Minister on the
day on which this Act comes into force, as well as to a person appointed to that
15office on or after that day.

2 Ineligibility for continuation as Prime Minister

(1) A person is ineligible to continue in the office of Prime Minister if the following
conditions are satisfied.

(2) The first condition is that that person has previously held the office of Prime
20Minister (whether before or after this Act comes into force).

(3) The second condition is that the person has held the office for an aggregate
period of the life of two Parliaments.

3 Citation, commencement and extent

(1) This Act may be cited as the Prime Minister (Limitation of Period of Office) Act
2014.

(2) This Act comes into force on the day on which it is passed.

(3) 5This Act extends to England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
