TO

Amend the Road Traffic Act 1988 to lower the prescribed limit of alcohol in
relation to driving or being in charge of a vehicle; and for connected purposes.

Be it enacted by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and
consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present
Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

1 Prescribed limit of alcohol

(1) In section 11(2) of the Road Traffic Act 1988 (interpretation of sections 4 to 10),
the definition of “the prescribed limit” is amended as follows.

(2) For paragraph (a) substitute—

(a) 522 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath,”.

(3) For paragraph (b) substitute—

(b) 50 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood,”.

(4) For paragraph (c) substitute—

(c) 67 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of urine,”.

2 10Proportion of alcohol for replacement of breath specimen

In section 8(2) of the Road Traffic Act 1988 (choice of specimens of breath), for
“50 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath” substitute “31
microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath”.

3 Extent, commencement and short title

(1) 15This Act extends to the whole of the United Kingdom.

(2) Sections 1 and 2 of this Act come into force on such day as the Secretary of State
may by regulations appoint.

(3) This section comes into force on the day on which this Act is passed.

(4) This Act may be cited as the Road Traffic Act 1988 (Alcohol Limits)
20(Amendment) Act 2015.
