The House met at half-past Nine o'clock.

1    The Speaker's Absence,—The House being met, and the Speaker having leave of absence pursuant to paragraph (3) of Standing Order No. 3 (Deputy Speaker), the First Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means, proceeded to the Table.

PRAYERS.

2    The First Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means took the Chair as Deputy Speaker.

3    Public Petitions,—A Public Petition from the Cod Crusaders Community Campaign for the restoration of British sovereign waters to national control was presented and read; and ordered to lie upon the Table and to be printed.

4    Motions to sit in Private,—Mr Andrew Dismore moved, That the House sit in private.

The Deputy Speaker put the Question forthwith, pursuant to Standing Order No. 163 (Motions to sit in private). The House divided.

      Tellers for the Ayes, Mr Andrew Dismore, Lawrie Quinn: 0.

      Tellers for the Noes, David Wright, Mr Nigel Beard: 25.

And it appearing from the report of the Division that fewer than forty Members had taken part in the Division, the Deputy Speaker declared that the Question was not decided.

5    Christmas Day (Trading) Bill,—The House, according to Order, proceeded to consider the Lords Amendments to the Christmas Day (Trading) Bill.

Lords Amendment No. 1. An Amendment ((a)) was proposed to the Lords Amendment, in page 1, line 7, to leave out '9' and insert '10', instead thereof.—(Mr Greg Knight.) And the Question being proposed, That the Amendment be made to the Lords Amendment:—The Amendment was, by the leave of the House, withdrawn. The Lords Amendment was agreed to. Lords Amendments Nos. 2 to 6 were agreed to. The Title was accordingly amended, as follows: A Bill to prohibit the opening of large shops on Christmas Day and to restrict the loading or unloading of goods at such shops on Christmas Day.

6    Crown Employment (Nationality) Bill,—The House, according to Order, proceeded to consider the Crown Employment (Nationality) Bill, not amended in the Standing Committee.

A Clause (NC1) (Appeals)—(Mr Christopher Chope)—brought up and read the first time. Question put, That the Clause be read a second time. The House divided.

      Tellers for the Ayes, Mr Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, Mr Christopher Chope: 1.

      Tellers for the Noes, Mr Andrew Dismore, David Wright: 21.

And it appearing from the report of the Division that fewer than forty Members had taken part in the Division, the Deputy Speaker declared that the Question was not decided and the business under consideration stood over until the next sitting of the House.

7    Sex Discrimination (Clubs and Other Private Associations) Bill,—The House, according to Order, proceeded to consider the Sex Discrimination (Clubs and Other Private Associations) Bill.

Amendment (No. 3) proposed to the Bill, in page 3, line 35, at the end to insert the words—

      '29E   Unreasonable works and alterations

      Nothing in the provisions of sections 29Ato 29D requires unreasonable works or alterations to be carried out on existing buildings.'.—(Mr Christopher Chope.)

      Question put, That the Amendment be made.

    The House divided.

      Tellers for the Ayes, Mr Christopher Chope, Mr Edward Leigh: 7.

      Tellers for the Noes, David Wright, Mr Stephen Pound: 20.

8    Children's Food Bill,—The Order of the day being read, for the Second Reading of the Children's Food Bill;

Ordered, That the Bill be read a second time on Friday 22nd October.

9    Lighter Evenings Bill,—The Order of the day being read, for the Second Reading of the Lighter Evenings Bill;

Ordered, That the Bill be read a second time on Friday 5th November.

10    Cinemas (Rural Areas) Bill,—The Order of the day being read, for the Second Reading of the Cinemas (Rural Areas) Bill;

Ordered, That the Bill be read a second time on Friday 5th November.

11    Marine Wildlife Conservation Bill,—The Order of the day being read, for the Second Reading of the Marine Wildlife Conservation Bill;

Ordered, That the Bill be read a second time on Friday 5th November.

12    Harbours Bill [Lords],—The Order of the day being read, for the Second Reading of the Harbours Bill [Lords];

Ordered, That the Bill be read a second time on Friday 5th November.

13    Rights of Way (Amendment) Bill,—The Order of the day being read, for resuming the adjourned Debate on the Question proposed on 21st May, That the Rights of Way (Amendment) Bill be now read a second time;

Ordered, That the Debate be resumed on Friday 24th December.

14    Criminal Justice (Justifiable Conduct) Bill,—The Order of the day being read, for resuming the adjourned Debate on the Question proposed on 14th May, That the Criminal Justice (Justifiable Conduct) Bill be now read a second time;

Ordered, That the Debate be resumed on Friday 24th December.

15    Rite of Passage (Welcoming and Coming of Age) Bill,—The Order of the day being read, for the Second Reading of the Rite of Passage (Welcoming and Coming of Age) Bill;

Ordered, That the Bill be read a second time on Friday 5th November.

16    Adjournment,—A Motion was made, and the Question being proposed, That this House do now adjourn—(Paul Clark);

And the Motion having been made after half-past Two o'clock, and Debate having continued for half an hour, the Deputy Speaker adjourned the House without Question put, pursuant to the Standing Order, it being then seven minutes past Three o'clock, till Monday 18th October. [Adjourned at 3.07 p.m.
