Dr. David Clark : To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food when he intends to introduce his ban on the use of cattle offal for human consumption ; and if he will make a statement.
Column 784
Mr. Gummer : I refer the hon. Member to my reply of 9 November 1989 to my hon. Friend the Member for Daventry (Mr. Boswell).
Dr. David Clark : To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement about the money allocated for his food safety directorate in (a) 1989-90 and (b) 1990-91.
Mr. Gummer : Not all the areas of the Ministry's work that constitute the new food safety directorate are currently subject to decentralised budgetary control for running costs and capital expenditure. Accordingly, there is no readily available estimate of the budgeted costs for this work in 1989-90. For 1990-91, the directorate as a whole will be subject to decentralised budgetary control for running costs and capital expenditure. Budget allocations for 1990-91 remain to be decided. Subject to the outcome of the current public expenditure survey we are planning significant increases in staffing for a number of areas of the directorate's work.
Dr. David Clarke : To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on what date he expects his food safety directorate to start operating.
Mr. Gummer : The new food safety directorate will be in full operation by 20 November. I am proceeding to establish the new consumer panel as quickly as possible.
Mr. Cox : To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will list the foods and the tonnage of surplus EEC foods that have been distributed to pensioners in the United Kingdom during the current year.
Mr. Curry : The information sought by the hon. Member is not available in the form requested. However, under the EC surplus food scheme the United Kingdom has some 3,000 tonnes of butter and 3,000 tonnes of beef available for distribution. All this produce has been released from intervention stores, and I have no reason to believe that most of it will not be distributed before the end of 1989. The timing of distribution is a matter for the designated organisations to decide according to local needs and their own capacity. Those who qualify for assistance under this Scheme are people in receipt of income support or family credit and those of no fixed abode or living in welfare hostels. Pensioners falling into one or other of these categories are, of course, eligible to receive produce.
Mr. Colvin : To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what representations he has received concerning the Country Landowners Association landlord and tenant survey.
Mr. Curry : The Country Landowners Association has, of course, informed my right hon. Friend the Minister and me about the results of its survey but no further representations have been received.

Mr. Barry Jones : To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list in the Official Report for each year since 1978 the number of (a) private beds in non-National Health Service hospitals by hospital, (b) private beds in National Health Service hospitals by health authority and hospital and (c) amenity beds in National Health Service hospitals by health authority and hospitals.
Column 786
Mr. Grist [holding answer 2 November 1989] : The information requested is given in the following tables in respect of : (a) the number of private beds in non National Health Service Hospitals (1982 onwards)-- table A ;
(b) the number of private beds in National Health Service hospitals by health authority and hospital--table B ;
(c) the number of amenity beds in the National Health Service by health authority, (1980 onwards)--table C.
A table showing the distribution of amenity beds in NHS hospitals by hospital could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
