Question accordingly agreed to.

Resolved,

That this House approves the Statement on the Defence Estimates 1990 contained in Cm. 1022.

BUSINESS OF THE HOUSE

Ordered,

That, at this day's sitting, the Greenwich Hospital Bill [ Lords ] and the Ways and Means Motion may be proceeded with, though opposed, until any hour.-- [Mr. Fallon.]

10.25 pm

Mr. Nicholas Bennett (Pembroke) : On a point of order, Mr. Speaker. Will you advise the House on the last Division? If the Opposition are so divided that votes by minority are required when they are in opposition, what hope is there of this country having a proper defence policy if they are in government?

Mr. Speaker : I do not think that that is a matter for me.

Mr. Max Madden (Bradford, West) : Further to that point of order, Mr. Speaker. I draw your attention to a matter of concern to Members with offices in Norman Shaw, South and North. Owing to work to the stairs in the subway on the corner of Bridge street and the Embankment, those of us with offices in Norman Shaw have to come to this place via the underground station, the gate of which closes at 12.30 am.

I understand that the work will take several weeks to complete. That will present difficulties when votes take place later this week and in the next few weeks. We shall have to negotiate the traffic across Bridge street and come down another subway or use the subway under the Embankment.

Will you please make inquiries and either give hon. Members some extra time for voting or make other arrangements for the work to be carried out during the summer recess?
