Mr. John Carlisle : To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what information he has on the amount of financial sponsorship of sport by the private sector each year over the last 10 years, showing the percentage change.
Mr. Atkins : The Government welcome the contribution of private sector sponsorship towards the funding of sport in the United Kingdom. The mutual benefits to sport and business are clear from the increase in such funding over the past 10 years. The available figures are :
Sponsorship Year |(£ millions)|Per cent. |increase ---------------------------------------------------- 1980 |30 |- 1981 |60 |100 1982 |85 |42 1983 |100 |18 1984 |110 |10 1985 |125 |14 1986 |145 |16 1987 |160 |10 1988 |180 |19 1989 |210 |17
Mr. John Carlisle : To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list the annual grant aid provided for the Sports Council since 1979.
Mr. Atkins : The Government's annual grant aid to the Sports Council of Great Britain since 1979 has been :
Year |£ millions --------------------------------- 1979-80 |15.580 1980-81 |19.288 1981-82 |21.032 1982-83 |28.002 1983-84 |27.123 1984-85 |28.603 1985-86 |30.112 1986-87 |37.349 1987-88 |37.150 1988-89 |38.412 1989-90 |41.877 1990-91 |<1>43.747 1991-92 |46.653 <1> Plus an extra £1 million.
Mr. John Carlisle : To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on his recent meeting with the British Boxing Board of Control.
Mr. Atkins : I had a constructive meeting with the BBBC on 16 October. My purpose in calling the meeting was to encourage discussion between medical specialists and the BBBC on safety in professional boxing. I understand that, as a result, the BBBC is intending to instigate regulations to include most of the recommendations proposed at that meeting.
Mr. John Carlisle : To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science when he last met the chairman of the Manchester Olympic Bid Committee ; and what was discussed.
Mr. Atkins : My right hon. Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for the Environment and I met the chairman of the bid committee together with representatives from the British Olympic Association and Manchester city council on 5 November to discuss progress with the bid.
Mr. John Carlisle : To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science when he expects the survey of school swimming facilities to be completed.
Mr. Atkins : Schools and local education authorities have been asked to complete and return survey questionnaires to the Department by 22 November 1991. The survey is intended to provide a picture of the access schools have to swimming pools ; the number of pools on school sites ; the recurrent costs associated with swimming provision ; and the cost of building learner pools where necessary. This information will help determine when a requirement can be introduced for all primary age pupils to be taught to swim.
