Dance, Drama and Music

Mr. Beggs : To ask the Secretary of State for Education whether he will provide a number of fully funded places for the most talented students from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to study dance, drama and music in the United Kingdom on an annual basis ; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Forth : Under the Government's music and ballet scheme help is already being made available to more than 550 talented children at the Royal Ballet school, four specialist music schools in England and, under slightly different arrangements, one in Scotland. Mandatory student awards and student loans are available for full-time first degree and comparable level courses in dance, drama and music. The Government also contribute significant amounts of taxpayers' money towards local authority expenditure on education. Local education authorities may also make discretionary awards for lower level courses. It is, however for each authority to determine its own policies on such support.

Questions about funding students in Scotland and Northern Ireland are matters for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland and my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.

Mr. Simon Coombs : To ask the Secretary of State for Education how many hours per week secondary school students are required to work in Britain ; and what are the equivalent figures for the United States of America, France, Germany and Japan.

Portakabin Classrooms

Mr. Alex Carlile : To ask the Secretary of State for Education how many Portakabin classrooms are currently in use ; how many there were in 1979, 1985 and 1990 ; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Forth : The Department holds no records on how many Portakabin classrooms are currently in use or how many were in use at any time in the past.

On temporary accommodation generally, "A Study of School Building" published by the Department and the Welsh Office in 1977 showed that 10 per cent. of primary and 7 per cent. of secondary school places were provided in temporary accommodation, both fixed and mobile. The "Survey of School Buildings" published by the Department in 1987 showed a reduction in these proportions to 7 per cent. of primary school accommodation and 6 per cent. of secondary school accommodation in England only.

Information on the position in 1990 could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

Retired Teachers

Mr. O'Hara : To ask the Secretary of State for Education how many male teachers retired from the profession at age 60, 61, 62, 63 and 64 years during each of the financial years 1989-90 to date.

Mr. Forth : The table shows the number of male teachers who retired from the profession at age 60, 61, 62, 63 and 64 years during each of the financial years 1989-90 to date.
