Mr. Llew Smith : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer of 16 July, Official Report, column 709, what was the source of data on pyrophoric qualities of depleted uranium to which he refers ; and if he will arrange for copies of the relevant information to be placed in the Library.

recently issued an unclassified fact sheet on "Health effects of depleted uranium" which was placed in the Library in response to a question from the hon. Member for Newport, West (Mr. Flynn) of 29 June, Official Report, column 491.Mr. Bennett : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence when he last visited the atomic weapons establishment at Aldermaston ; what was the purpose of his visit ; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. Aitken : My right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Defence last visited AWE Aldermaston in June. The purpose of his visit was a briefing on the role and work of AWE.
Mr. Bennett : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the fire which occurred in a glove box in the A area of AWE Aldermaston on 15 June.
Mr. Aitken : There was no such incident on 15 June 1993.
Mr. Redmond : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list by year for the last five years, the cost of running the Aldermaston atomic weapons establishment.
Mr. Aitken : The costs of the defence nuclear programme, including the costs of AWE, are classified, in accordance with the practice of successive Governments.
Mr. Meale : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence in what circumstances stewards employed by hunts are allowed on to Ministry of Defence land where the hunt that employs them has a licence to hunt on Ministry of Defence land.
Mr. Hanley : My noble Friend the Under-Secretary of State for Defence will write to the hon. Member.
Mr. Meale : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what were the total receipts in 1991-92 from licences for hunting on Ministry of Defence land, from all hunts that held a licence.

Mr. Meale : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what arrangements exist for beagle hunts to hunt or have access to Ministry of Defence land other than those licensed to do so.

Mr. Meale : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many licences his Department issued to shooting clubs allowing them to shoot birds and mammals on Ministry of Defence land in (a) 1991, (b) 1992 and (c) 1993 to date.

Mr. Chris Smith : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what plans he has to intensify or increase infantry training at Otterburn in the Northumberland national park ; and what plans he has to acquire additional land for military training in the national park.
Mr. Hanley : The concentration of infantry recruit training at Catterick will mean an increase in man training days at Otterburn training area. Some additional land may be required. This will be subject to the outcome of an independent environmental impact assessment study and further discussions with the National Park Authority.
Mr. Hendry : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how much land in the United Kingdom his Department purchased over each of the past five years.
Mr. Hanley : My noble Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Defence will write to the hon. Member.
Mr. Hendry : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what was the cost of providing security for empty Ministry of Defence married quarters over the past year.
Mr. Hanley : I refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave him on 16 July, Official Reply, column 723. The cost of caretaking covers security.
Mr. Hendry : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is his policy towards residence by widows of late service personnel with children in Ministry of Defence married quarters not required for use.
Mr. Hanley : All widows of late service personnel are allowed to remain in a married quarter for up to six months after the death of their husband. Procedures vary slightly within individual services, but all widows continue to pay the standard accommodation charge during this period. Accommodation may sometimes be available in surplus married quarters and widows may be allowed to remain there beyond the six-month period until they have found alternative accommodation, so long as there are no pressing service requirements for the property.
Mr. Hendry : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many discount sales of Ministry of Defence married quarters have been made in the past year to service personnel leaving the forces.
Mr. Hanley : Further to the answer I gave my hon. Friend on 20 July 1993, Official Report, column 165, during 1992-93, 346 sales were completed through the services discount scheme.

Mr. McAllion : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list the numbers of staff by grade that are employed in his Department and agencies in the automatic data processing functional specialism.
Mr. Aitken : Numbers of staff by grade that are employed in the automatic data processing functional specialism as at 22 July 1993 are as follows :

Mr. David Shaw : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the achievements of (a) his policies and (b) his Department in helping small businesses over the last 12 months as against the previous 12 months ; and if he will publish the performance indicators by which his Department monitors those achievements and the statistical results of such monitoring.
Mr. Aitken : Further to the reply given to my hon. Friend on 15 July 1992, Official Report, column 817, I can inform him that our new suppliers service has given marketing advice to about 2,000 companies over the past 12 months. Also, in November 1992 the MOD reissued its advisory booklet on selling to the MOD. The publication is intended to be of particular value to small companies. Details of payments made to small firms during 1992-93 are not yet available, but during 1991-92, some 6,300 small companies secured contracts valued at approximately £1.16 billion. A significant number of these orders went to companies with less than 50 employees. In the same period Ministry of Defence establishments awarded 276,000 local purchase orders valued at about £222 million, a large number of which went to small firms.
Mr. Barry Jones : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list by Welsh local authority the extent of the land held by his Department indicating in each area the amount of land to be sold by the end of 1993.
Mr. Hanley : The information requested is provided by county. A breakdown by local authority could be provided only at
disproportionate cost.
