Mr. Hanley : My noble Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Defence will write to the hon. Member.
Dr. David Clark : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer to the hon. Member for Welwyn Hatfield (Mr. Evans), of 23 February, Official Report, column 217, if he will now list the current locations of all those Army personnel who have been selected for redundancies ; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. Hanley : The breakdown by theatre at the time of my answer of 23 February, Official Report, column 217, is as follows :

Dr. David Clark : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make it his policy to ask the Commission for Racial Equality to investigate equal opportunities policies in the armed forces ; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. Hanley : It is our policy to offer equal opportunities to all racial groups but we do consult the Commission for Racial Equality when we require advice on race relations issues.
Dr. David Clark : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer of 10 February, Official Report, column 482 , if he will make it his policy to announce the results of his consideration of whether or not to publish a breakdown of the ethnic origins of serving personnel by regiment or unit.
Mr. Hanley : Yes, when a decision is made in due course.
Dr. David Clark : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer of 10 February, Official Report, column 484, what non-MOD organisations or individuals have been consulted in the course of preparing the new manual on peacekeeping ; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. Hanley : We have consulted widely at the United Nations and the Western European Union, and among allies and academic bodies with an interest in peacekeeping.

Dr. David Clark : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer of 21 February, Official Report, column 65, if he will place in the Library copies of all information that he has received on the subject of alleged Desert Storm syndrome from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, and from the Congressional Record ; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. Hanley : Arrangements will be made for copies of all information relating to the alleged Desert Storm syndrome which has been received by my Department from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defence and from the Congressional Record, and for which their permission has been granted for release into the public domain, to be placed in the Library of the House.
Dr. David Clark : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer of 10 February, Official Report, column 483, if he will provide a detailed breakdown of all military lawyers employed by his Department.
Mr. Hanley : The breakdown of legal officers in the armed services is as follows :

Dr. David Clark : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the estimated annual cost of Operation Grapple ; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. Hanley : It is estimated that the extra cost of Operation Grapple for financial year 1993-94 will amount to approximately £76, 000,000.
Dr. David Clark : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will provide a detailed breakdown of the costs associated with the British contribution to United Nations operations in the former Yugoslavia ; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. Hanley : The cost of the British contributions to the United Nations operations in the former Yugoslavia is estimated to be some £81,000,000 in financial year 1993-94. A breakdown of these costs is as follows :
£76,000,000 for Operation Grapple in Bosnia ;
£1,000,000 for Operation Hanwood, the field ambulance which withdrew from Croatia in September 1993 ;
£3,900,000 for Operation Cheshire, the British contribution to the Sarajevo airlift.
In addition the United Kingdom assessed contributions to UNPROFOR paid by the FCO during the financial year is estimated to be between £38,000,000 and £40,000,000.
Dr. David Clark : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the estimated annual cost of the British contribution to Operation Deny Flight ; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Hanley : The additional cost to the defence budget for financial year 1993-94 is currently estimated to be around £25,000, 000.
Dr. David Clark : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer of 23 February, Official Report, column 223, if he will account for the difference in size of the British Army mortar locating troop deployed in Sarajevo, as given in his answer and in his Department's bulletin of 24 February on events in the former Yugoslavia and Iraq.
Mr. Hanley : Following the original decision to deploy the mortar locating troop to Bosnia, it was decided to increase its size by an additional 10 personnel. This accounts for the difference between my answer of 23 February, Official Report, column 233, and the parliamentary bulletin of 24 February.
Dr. David Clark : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence whether it is his intention to equip the landing platform dock replacements with close-in air defence systems ; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. Aitken : Pending the outcome of project definition studies for the landing platform dock replacement it is our current intention to equip the vessel with close-in air defence systems.
Dr. David Clark : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer to the hon. Member for Newcastle upon Tyne, East (Mr. Brown), of 23 February, Official Report, column 217, which company has been awarded the contract for further project definition work on the command system for the landing platform dock.
Mr. Aitken : A contract has been placed with Ferranti International plc--in administrative receivership--for further project definition in respect of the command system for the landing platform
dock--replacement.
Dr. David Clark : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence whether it is his intention to purchase landing platform dock replacements with a smaller capability to accommodate troops ; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Aitken : Project Definition studies for the landing platform dock--replacement--are still underway and are due to complete this spring. These studies are looking at, among other matters, the embarked force capability of the vessel.
Dr. David Clark : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer of 22 February, Official Report, column 33, if he will write to (a) the chairman of the Conservative party and (b) the organisers of the Conservative party function at Ayton castle on 28 January to remind them of the regulations relating to military bands ; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. Hanley : I have nothing further to add to the answer I gave on 22 February, Official Report, column 133.
Dr. David Clark : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer of 10 February, Official Report, column 483, if he will make it his policy to offer military personnel to be attached to the United Nations secretariat ; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. Hanley : I have nothing to add to the reply I gave the hon. Member on 10 February, Official Report, column 483.
Mr. Steen : To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his answer of 22 February, Official Report, column 133, how much the new garage for the private cars of the captain of the Britannia Royal Naval college has cost.
Mr. Hanley : The cost of the garage, which has been resited as a result of a specific security recommendation, was £25,000.
