Philosophy Courses

Mr. Llwyd: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people graduated from Scottish higher education institutions with honours either in philosophy or in a joint honours or composite degree involving philosophy in 1994; what proportion of the total number graduating from Scottish higher education this represents; and if he will make a statement.      [20901]

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton: In 1993, the latest year for which information is available, 85 people graduated from Scottish higher education institutions with a degree where philosophy was the main or only subject; this represents 0.5 per cent. of all degree graduates from Scottish higher education institutions in 1993.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton: Out of the 22 higher education institutions in Scotland, six currently offer degree courses in philosophy; this represents a proportion of 27 per cent.

Dr. Godman: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many (a) firearms, (b) knives and (c) other dangerous weapons or implements were found hidden in prisons in (i) 1979, (ii) 1985, (iii) 1990 and (iv) the last year for which figures are available.      [16828]

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton has asked me to reply to your Question about the number of firearms, knives and other dangerous weapons or implements found hidden in prisons in 1979, 1985, 1990 and the last year for which figures are available.

The information requested is not held centrally and could only be obtained at disproportionate cost.

NATIONAL HERITAGE

Royal Collections

Mr. Chris Smith: To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage if he will publish a definitive catalogue of all the works of art in the royal collections which are held by the Crown on behalf of the nation; if he will indicate how many of these works have been displayed to the general public; and for how long.      [20990]

Mr. Dorrell: The royal collection is a department of the royal household and is not a responsibility of my Department. I understand that the royal household is completing an inventory of works of art in the royal collection, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 1997.
