Fire Service

Ms Bridget Prentice: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will review the criteria for risk categories for firefighting; and if he will make a statement. [6923]

Mr. Sackville: The criteria for risk categories are an integral part of the nationally recommended minimum standards of fire cover. In response to a recommendation in the Audit Commission report. "In the line of Fire", these standards are being reviewed by the Central Brigades Advisory Council.

Ms Prentice: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the estimated cost of rebuilding Downham fire station. [6920]

Mr. Sackville: Responsibility for the provision of fire services, including the cost of rebuilding fire stations, is a matter for the fire authority concerned--in this case, the London fire and civil defence authority.

Marchioness Disaster

Mr. Spearing: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the expected approximate length, in words and A4 pages, of the complete transcript of the re-opened inquest into the victims of the Marchioness disaster held in April 1995; and what plans

he has for making it available to the relatives of the deceased and to other interested parties. [7121]

Mr. Sackville: I understand that the transcript is about 3,000 pages and approximately 900,000 words in length. The supply of such a document is entirely a matter for the coroner, in accordance with the Coroners Rules 1984.

Visa Applications

Mr. Henderson: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many applications for (a) single entry and (b) multiple entry visit visas were (i) received, (ii) granted and (iii) refused at each post in the Indian sub-continent, Ghana, Nigeria, the Philippines and Jamaica in each quarter of 1994 and the first quarters of 1995; and what was the delay between application and interview for those whose applications were felt to need a second or long interview at each of the above posts in

[6730]

Mr. Maclean: The information is given in the table.

The appropriate use of the powers contained in the Act is a matter for each local authority to determine according to local priorities.

Departmental Running Costs

Mr. Malcolm Bruce: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his estimate of the cost of running his departmental office, and that of his predecessor, for each year since 1990-91 including the current year, broken down into (a) telephone bills, (b) total staff costs, (c) press and communications, (d) entertainment, (e) alcoholic drinks, (f) non-alcoholic drinks, (g) stationery, (h) office refurbishment and (i) other. [6399]

Mr. Howard: The estimated cost of running my departmental office for the current year and for the previous two years are as follows:

1993-941994-951995-96
Total staff costs1,326,3431,612,7461,771,631
Press and communications11,083,79314,140,92010,958,900
Running costs485,343510,988875,669

These figures exclude the cost of telephone bills which is not available as a specific cost to my departmental office.

The information on office refurbishment was given in reply to a question from the hon. Member for Newham, North-West (Mr. Banks) on 18 December 1995, Official Report, column 968.

Expenditure on the other items in each of the last three years is not collected in the format requested but is included in the running cost expenditure which is shown in the table.

Figures for 1990-91, 1991-92 and 1992-93 can be made available only at disproportionate cost.

Prison Boards of Visitors

Mr. Redmond: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if he will list the names, occupations and qualifications of members of the boards of visitors for HMP Lindholme and HMP Moorlands; [2233]

Miss Widdecombe: Members of boards of visitors at each prison and young offender institution in England and Wales are appointed by my right hon. and learned Friend. Occupation is not a criterion for appointment and information about members' occupations is not held centrally and could be gathered only at disproportionate cost. There are no requirements for specific formal qualifications.

Nominations for boards of visitors come from a variety of sources. Many candidates put themselves forward as a result of seeing advertised vacancies in newspapers and other outlets or are referred from a variety of other voluntary organisations. The only criteria for applying are that the candidate should live within about 20 miles of the prison or young offender institution to which they wish to be appointed, must not have an interest in any contract for the supply of goods or services to that establishment or other close link which would affect their impartiality, and have the time, interest and commitment to undertake

the duties of a board member. Applications to join boards of visitors are welcome from anyone who fits these criteria.

Deportation Orders

Mr. Henderson: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many (a) decisions have been made to deport, (b) deportation orders signed and (c) deportation orders enforced against (i) British overseas citizens and (ii) other British nationals who are not British citizens in each year since 1990; to which countries it has been proposed to send these people; and how many such people against whom decisions to deport were made left the country voluntarily. [7685]

Mr. Kirkhope: The information available is given in the table. Statistics are not available on the countries to which British nationals have been removed from the United Kingdom under the deportation process. Of the 27 British nationals removed in 1994, 26 were British dependent territories citizens or British nationals (overseas) from Hong Kong, and one was a BDTC from St. Helena.

[7602]

Mr. Kirkhope: Information on notices of intention to deport issued up to the third quarter of 1995 is given in table A. An analysis by nationality of the person, in respect of notices issued in the whole of 1994, is given in table B; the quarterly data requested for he whole of the period from July 1993 onwards could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
