Low Flying

Mr. Redmond: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make it his policy to inform hon. Members of proposed low flying exercises. [2230]

Mr. Soames: I refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave to the hon. Member for Pendle (Mr. Prentice) on 10 February 1995, Official Report, column 463.

Mr. Llwyd: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make it his policy to review the conduct of low flying; and if he will make a statement. [2434]

Mr. Soames: The regulations governing the use of the United Kingdom low flying system are kept under continuous review.

Shoeburyness Firing Range (Noise)

Sir Roger Moate: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement about the number of complaints he has received in the current year from Kent residents about (a) noise and (b) vibration from the Shoeburyness firing range; how many exceptionally loud detonations have taken place; what procedures are adopted to reduce inconvenience to the minimum possible; and what is the role of the establishment within the defence strategy. [2439]

Mr. Arbuthnot: This is a matter for the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency under its framework document. I have asked the chief executive to write to the hon. Member.

Territorial Army Volunteer Reserve (Chaplains)

Sir Irvine Patnick: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many chaplains are currently appointed in the TAVR; to which regiments they are attached; which denominations they represent; and if he will make a statement. [2872]

Mr. Soames: There are at present 103 serving TA chaplains with three more in the process of being recruited.

The 103 serving TA chaplains are deployed as follows:


There are a further 11 chaplains serving with minor units.

Tornado Air Miss (Alaska)

Mr. Foulkes: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will place in the Library a copy of the report on the air miss between two Royal Air Force Tornado GR1s over Alaska in May 1993. [1308]

Mr. Soames: The investigation of air misses and publication of any subsequent reports are matters for the aviation authority in whose airspace the alleged incident occurred. My Department is not aware of an air miss between two Tornados over Alaska in May 1993.

Research and Development

Mrs. Anne Campbell: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what were the indicative contributions to the EU budget in respect of research and development for his Department in 1993-94. [1909]

Mr. Arbuthnot: Table 2.1 of the statistical supplement to the forward look of Government-funded science, engineering and technology contains indicative figures for the United Kingdom's contributions to the EC budget in respect of research and development. My Department does not have policy responsibility for Community research and development expenditure.

Airwork Ltd.

Mr. Ieuan Wyn Jones: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will respond to the report of the Defence Select Committee into the work carried out on Tornado jets based at RAF St. Athans by Airwork Ltd. during 1993. [2399]

Mr. Arbuthnot: The Government intend to respond by the end of the year to the Defence Committee's report on market testing and contracting out of defence support functions.

Military Equipment Sales (Civilian Casualties)

Mr. Llew Smith: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make it his policy to collate figures on civilian casualties caused by military equipment sold by United Kingdom firms. [2774]

Mr. Arbuthnot: In the case of equipment owned by the Ministry of Defence, accidents at work to MoD civilians are reportable to the Health and Safety Executive under the reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1985.

Lockerbie

Mr. Dalyell: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on the role of Ministry of Defence personnel in the examination of timing devices

allegedly connected with the destruction of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie. [1636]

Mr. Soames: Ministry of Defence scientists did assist the Dumfries and Galloway police. I am not prepared to give details that could prejudice criminal proceedings.

Isle of Wight (Visit)

Mr. Barry Field: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what plans he has to visit defence contractors on the Isle of Wight to discuss defence production. [838]

Mr. Arbuthnot: Currently I have no plans to do so.

Ministry of Defence Police

Mr. Key: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the current strength, by rank, of the Ministry of Defence police; what he expects it to be, by rank, in each of the next three years; and if he will make a statement. [2875]

Mr. Soames: The strength, by rank, of the Ministry of Defence police, as at 1 October 1995, was: chief constable, one; deputy chief constable, one; assistant chief constable, four; chief superintendent, seven; superintendent, 25; chief inspector, 58; inspector, 149; sergeant, 698; and constable 3,436.

The overall manpower requirements of the Ministry of Defence police are kept under constant review. We will issue consultative documents concerning our proposals for future defence police and guarding requirements shortly.
