Statistics (Gender Breakdown)

Ms Jowell: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps his Department is taking to collect statistics broken down by gender where relevant. [17689]

Mr. Michael Forsyth: The role of the statistical services in the Scottish Office is to collect and analyse statistics on most aspects of Scottish life. Where relevant, this involves the collection and publication of statistics broken down by gender. As a result, gender is distinguished in a wide range of statistical information handled by the Department.

Local Government Reorganisation

Mr. Bill Walker: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement about sheriffdom and sheriff court district boundaries following reorganisation of local government. [18601]

Mr. Michael Forsyth: My Department issued a consultation document on 29 December 1995, copies of which have been placed in the Library. As a result of the responses to the consultation paper, I propose to make only minor adjustments to five sheriff court district boundaries as described. As a consequence of these changes, there would be minor changes to the boundaries of the sheriffdoms of Glasgow and Strathkelvin and South Strathclyde, Dumfries and Galloway respectively. My proposals will be brought before the House for approval shortly.

Sheriff Court DistrictProposed Changes
AirdrieAirdrie will retain its current jurisdiction with the addition of part of Strathclyde Electoral Division 46 (Chryston)
