Lighthouse Keepers

Mr. Gordon Prentice: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many lighthouse keepers there are in (a) Great Britain and (b) Northern Ireland. [18774]

Mr. Norris: There are 105 lighthouse keepers in Great Britain and six in Northern Ireland.

East Coast Main Line

Mr. Wilson: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will place in the Library the contract between Stagecoach Holdings plc and British Rail with regard to its operations on the east coast main line. [18573]

Mr. Watts: The contract between InterCity West Coast and Stagecoach Holdings plc, under which Stagecoach provided overnight seated train services from Aberdeen, Dundee, and Edinburgh to London and return, is commercially confidential.

Road Construction

Mr. Llwyd: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the planned expenditure on road construction in the years (a) 1995 to 1996 and (b) 1996 to 1997; and if he will make a statement. [18741]

Mr. Watts: Expenditure on new construction in England, net of capital receipts and design, build, finance and operate current costs, is estimated at £1,169 million

in 1995-96 and £973 million in 1996-97 in cash terms. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Transport made two announcements on 28 November 1995 to detail the background to this expenditure.

InterCity

Mr. Wilson: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will publish the accounts of InterCity at the time of its break-up. [18572]

Mr. Watts: The accounts of InterCity for this period are incorporated in the British Railways Board's annual report and accounts for 1993-94, a copy of which is available in the Library of the House.

Channel Tunnel (Inspections)

Mrs. Dunwoody: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list the dates of inspections undertaken by his Department on the channel tunnel for the last 12 months, indicating the deficiencies found at each inspection. [18676]

Mr. Watts: Safety inspections of the channel tunnel are carried out by inspectors of national authorities of UK and France and other experts authorised by the Channel Tunnel Safety Authority. These inspectors visit the tunnel several times a month and report to the safety authority on a range of matters; no major deficiency has been reported. Where problems have been identified, they have been raised with Eurotunnel which has taken corrective action.

Herald of Free Enterprise

Mrs. Dunwoody: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list the recommendations of the report into the loss of the Herald of Free Enterprise that have not yet been implemented; and when he expects these to be implemented. [18674]

Mr. Norris: I refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave to the House of 16 October 1995, Official Report, columns 83-84.

Accident Statistics

Mrs. Dunwoody: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list by police force the number of accidents involving (a) heavy goods vehicles, (b) passenger service vehicles and (c) minibuses for each of the last five years. [18668]

Mr. Norris: The information requested is shown in the following three tables. Figures for 1995 are not yet available.
