Mr. Raynsford: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list by standard housing region the number of households accepted as homeless by each local authority in England in 1995. [23108]
Mr. Curry: I refer the hon. Member to the answer that my right hon. Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State gave to the hon. Member for Coventry, South-East (Mr. Cunningham) on 19 March 1996, Official Report, column 137.
Mr. Kilfoyle: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many waste incinerators there are in the United Kingdom; and how many of them meet European Union standards. [23156]
2 Apr 1996 : Column: 165
Mr. Clappison: A figure for the total number of waste incinerators in the United Kingdom is not readily available. Depending upon the size of the incinerator and the type of waste being burnt, the operation of incinerators is regulated by HM inspectorate of pollution, HM industrial pollution inspectorate in Scotland, the Department of the Environment in Northern Ireland or local authorities.
The EU legislation relating to waste incineration contains implementation dates by which existing units have to meet new standards. In some cases, tighter emission standards have been agreed. The implementation dates for these various standards have not yet been reached.
Mr Raynsford: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the total expenditure of his Department in each of the past five years and what is the budget for (a) 1995-96, (b) 1996-97 and (c) 1997-98 for research on construction-related matters commissioned from organisations other than the Building Research Establishment, (i) in total (ii) as a percentage of his Department's total research expenditure; and if he will list the organisations which have been commissioned to undertake such research. [23092]
Mr. Robert B. Jones: Expenditure on research and technical advice on construction-related matters commissioned from organisations other than the Building Research Establishment in each of the past five years was:
A list of organisations other than the BRE from which such research has been commissioned is attached.

[23093]
Sir Paul Beresford: Research and consultancy work for the above groups on matters relating to the Thames is commissioned by the Government office for London. The following work has been commissioned in the past two years:
Research | Consultancy |
---|---|
1994-95 | |
Research for River Thames Working group report | Wootton Jefferys |
Thames strategy | Ove Arup Partnership |
1995-96 | |
Survey of upriver wharves on the tidal Thames | London Rivers Association |
The business case for a passenger transport service on the River Thames | London First, KPMG, Steer Davies Gleave |
The total cost to the Government of this work was £146,043.
The Government office for London has also contributed a total of £37,500 in 1995-96 towards urban design schemes for Thames-side sites in Southwark and Hounslow.
Mr. Raynsford:
To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what assumptions have been made about the potential contribution towards the Government's target for social lettings deriving from the Ministry of Defence married quarters estate. [23101]
Mr. Curry:
None. It is for local housing authorities and housing associations to decide how to apply their resources to create social lettings, and to consider what use they may be able to make of surplus MOD housing that becomes available in their local area.
Mr. Vaz:
To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what representations he has received concerning housing renewal issues in Jermyn street, Leicester. [23667]
Mr. Clappison:
No representations have been received about housing renewal issues from the residents of Jermyn street, Leicester.
2 Apr 1996 : Column: 169
Mr. Vaz:
To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment when he will be prepared to meet representatives of the residents of Jermyn street, Leicester, and the hon. Member for Leicester, East to discuss housing renewal issues. [23668]
Mr. Clappison:
It is primarily for the Leicester city council to respond to the concerns of residents of Jermyn street, Leicester, about these housing renewal issues. Accordingly, I suggest that the hon. Member contacts the city's director of housing to discuss a possible meeting.
