Homelessness

Mr. Raynsford: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list by standard housing region the number of households accepted as homeless by each local authority in England in 1995. [23108]

Mr. Curry: I refer the hon. Member to the answer that my right hon. Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State gave to the hon. Member for Coventry, South-East (Mr. Cunningham) on 19 March 1996, Official Report, column 137.

Waste Incinerators

Mr. Kilfoyle: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many waste incinerators there are in the United Kingdom; and how many of them meet European Union standards. [23156]

Mr. Clappison: A figure for the total number of waste incinerators in the United Kingdom is not readily available. Depending upon the size of the incinerator and the type of waste being burnt, the operation of incinerators is regulated by HM inspectorate of pollution, HM industrial pollution inspectorate in Scotland, the Department of the Environment in Northern Ireland or local authorities.

The EU legislation relating to waste incineration contains implementation dates by which existing units have to meet new standards. In some cases, tighter emission standards have been agreed. The implementation dates for these various standards have not yet been reached.

Construction Research

Mr Raynsford: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the total expenditure of his Department in each of the past five years and what is the budget for (a) 1995-96, (b) 1996-97 and (c) 1997-98 for research on construction-related matters commissioned from organisations other than the Building Research Establishment, (i) in total (ii) as a percentage of his Department's total research expenditure; and if he will list the organisations which have been commissioned to undertake such research. River Thames

Mr. Raynsford: To ask the Secretary of State for the Enviornment what (a) research and (b) consultancy has been commissioned by (i) his Department, (ii) the Government office for London, (iii) the River Thames working group and (iv) the Thames advisory group in each of the past two years on matters relating to the River Thames; and if he will list the organisation as undertaking this work and its total cost. [23093]

Sir Paul Beresford: Research and consultancy work for the above groups on matters relating to the Thames is commissioned by the Government office for London. The following work has been commissioned in the past two years:

The total cost to the Government of this work was £146,043.

The Government office for London has also contributed a total of £37,500 in 1995-96 towards urban design schemes for Thames-side sites in Southwark and Hounslow.

MOD Married Quarters Estate

Mr. Raynsford: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what assumptions have been made about the potential contribution towards the Government's target for social lettings deriving from the Ministry of Defence married quarters estate. [23101]

Mr. Curry: None. It is for local housing authorities and housing associations to decide how to apply their resources to create social lettings, and to consider what use they may be able to make of surplus MOD housing that becomes available in their local area.

Housing Renewal (Leicester)

Mr. Vaz: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what representations he has received concerning housing renewal issues in Jermyn street, Leicester. [23667]

Mr. Clappison: No representations have been received about housing renewal issues from the residents of Jermyn street, Leicester.

Mr. Vaz: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment when he will be prepared to meet representatives of the residents of Jermyn street, Leicester, and the hon. Member for Leicester, East to discuss housing renewal issues. [23668]

Mr. Clappison: It is primarily for the Leicester city council to respond to the concerns of residents of Jermyn street, Leicester, about these housing renewal issues. Accordingly, I suggest that the hon. Member contacts the city's director of housing to discuss a possible meeting.
