Mr. David Atkinson: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if she will make a statement on the problem of non-recognition by computers of the year 2000 with regard to her Department's computers and those for which it is responsible. [24410]
Mr. Robin Squire: Officials who take responsibility for the Department's computer systems are keenly aware of the potential difficulties presented by the year 2000. During the coming months they will undertake a thorough audit of the software to establish the scale of the problem. They will then prepare and execute a plan of action to overcome them using, where necessary, advice from the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency and suppliers.
Ms Ruddock: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if she will make a statement on progress in establishing an office waste minimisation strategy for her Department, indicating the targets set. [24504]
Mr. Robin Squire: The former Education and Employment Departments both had established "green housekeeping" strategies consistent with their business needs. Waste minimisation forms an important part of the DFEE integrated strategy, but specific targets have not been set.

[24431]
Mr. Paice [holding answer 2 April 1996]: It is not the policy of the Department for Education and Employment to comment on the affairs of individual companies.
