Mr. Charles Kennedy: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many representations he received in favour of the proposal to site an ambulance base at Kyleakin, Isle of Skye; and if he will make a statement. [29238]
14 May 1996 : Column: 433
Lord James Douglas-Hamilton: None. However, the Scottish Ambulance Service NHS trust aims to make the most efficient and effective use of the resources at its disposal to improve the quality of service to its patients. In view of the changes brought about by the opening of the Skye bridge, the Scottish Ambulance Service has conducted a review and has concluded that the additional costs of establishing an ambulance station in Kyleakin will be justified by improved activation and response times. Highland health board, which is responsible for purchasing appropriate levels of emergency ambulance provision in the area, has supported these proposals.
Mr. Kennedy: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will hold an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the decision to site an ambulance base at Kyleakin, Isle of Skye, with specific reference to the prohibition upon serving personnel to discuss the issue with others; and if he will make a statement. [29239]
Lord James Douglas-Hamilton: No. The deployment of its staff and vehicles and the siting of ambulance stations are operational matters for the Scottish Ambulance Service NHS trust to decide in agreement with the purchasing health board. The staff are fully aware of the proposals and have the opportunity to make any observations on these to senior officers of the service.
Mr. Charles Kennedy: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the subsidy to be paid to Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd. for the financial year commencing 1 April 1996; what it was for the year ended 31 March; how much of the difference in the figures is attributable to the withdrawal of the Kyle of Lochalsh-Kyleakin service; and if he will make a statement. [29240]
Lord James Douglas-Hamilton: Subject to approval of the estimates, the Government propose to make available to Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd. in 1996-97 revenue deficit grant amounting to £11.7 million. The amount of revenue deficit grant made available to Caledonian MacBrayne in 1995-96 was £8.3 million. The increased requirement for revenue deficit grant in 1996-97 reflects a number of factors, including the loss of the revenue contribution from the Kyle of Lochalsh-Kyleakin service and the cost of compliance with additional safety requirements applying to ro-ro ferries. It is not the Government's practice to disclose information about the profit or loss incurred by Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd. in providing ferry services on individual routes.
Mrs. Ewing: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will provide a breakdown of the number of current vacancies for consultants in each NHS trust in Scotland; and if he will make a statement. [29496]
Lord James Douglas-Hamilton: The information requested is not held centrally.
Mrs. Ewing: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many doctors were in higher training for consultancy positions in each year since 1990. [29498]
Lord James Douglas-Hamilton: The information requested is shown in the table.
