NORTHERN IRELAND

Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy

Mr. John D. Taylor: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many times BSE infection has been found in cattle being imported into the United Kingdom; and from which countries the infected cattle originated. [28852]

Mr. Ancram: I understand that 14 animals have been imported into the UK which have been subsequently confirmed as having BSE. Although exact dates of importation are not known, the animals are believed to have resided in the UK for a sufficient period to have been exposed to BSE infective material. It cannot be concluded that the animals were affected with BSE when imported.

Environmental Improvement Schemes

Mr. John D. Taylor: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland at which location environmental improvement schemes have been completed; which schemes are presently under construction; what funds have been allocated for such schemes in each of the next three years; what proposals there are for an environmental improvement scheme at Killyleagh; and if he will make a statement. [29874]

Mr. Moss: The following lists set out the locations where environmental improvement schemes are under construction. For each of the next three financial years, £2.7 million has been programmed by the Department of the Environment for environmental improvement schemes.

A scheme has been identified at High street, Castle place, Killyleagh, to link with a roads scheme. At present, it is programmed for 1998-99 at a cost of £200,000 approximately.

Deregulation Unit

Mr. Steen: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the annual budget for his departmental deregulation unit; how many staff it employs; and of these how many (a) are career civil servants and of what grades, (b) have been seconded from business, and (c) have experience of the private sector. Mr. Ancram: The annual budget for 1995-96 for the Department of Economic Development's deregulation unit, which co-ordinates the deregulatory activity of Northern Ireland Departments was £154,065. The budget provides for the following career civil servants, none of whom have private sector experience:


The unit does not have any secondees from business.

Teilifis na Gaeilge

Mr. Mackinlay: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what meetings he has had with Teilifis na Gaeilge; and if he will make a statement. [29973]

Mr. Ancram: There have been no meetings between Northern Ireland Office Ministers and Teilifis na Gaeilge.
