Prescriptions

Mr. Nigel Jones: To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many prescriptions were dispensed in each year since 1979; and how many were free of charge. [38010]

1. The analysis is based on a 1 in 20 sample of all prescriptions submitted to the Prescription Pricing Authority by community pharmacists and appliances contractors. Dispensing doctor and personal administration prescriptions are not analysed into exempt, non-exempt or other categories.

2. 1979 to 1990 data is based on fees and covers prescriptions dispensed by community pharmacists and appliance contractors only.

3. 1991 to 1994 data (new PCA) are based on items and have the same coverage as in note 1 above.

Dental Services

Mr. Redmond: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will commission a study into the provision of, and access to, NHS dentistry; and if he will make a statement. [39227]

Mr. Malone: We keep in regular contact with health authorities on the provision of, and access to, national health service dentistry across England.

Cancer Commission Groups (Trent)

Mr. Redmond: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what terms of reference he has given Trent National Health Service Executive in respect of cancer commission groups; and if he will make a statement. [39229]

Mr. Horam: The Department of Health issued guidance on 15 March 1996 asking National Health Service Executive regional offices to have a role in designation of cancer centres, facilitating the local work of health authorities, general practitioners, and trusts, particularly on cross district issues. Regional co-ordinators are expected to help develop a regional strategy.

Mr. Redmond: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will list the membership of Trent NHS Executive cancer commission groups. [39230]

Mr. Horam: National Health Service Executive, Trent has set up cancer commissioning groups for southern Derbyshire, Leicestershire, north Trent and Nottinghamshire/Lincolnshire. The membership of each group is set out:

Hepatitis C

Tardive Dyskinesia

Mr. Redmond: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will commission a study into (a) tardive dyskinesia and minor abnormalities, (b) schizophrenia and minor physical abnormalities and (c) tardive dyskinesia and negative symptoms; and if he will make a statement. [39216]

Mr. Bowis: The links between Tardive Dyskinesia, minor physical abnormalities and negative symptoms are already well researched.

Medical Records

Ms Harman: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the average charge levied on patients for seeing their medical records. [39270]

Mr. Horam: The Access to Health Records Act 1990 allows the record holder to charge a fee of up to £10. A similar fee is permitted when access is sought under the Data Protection Act 1984. Where a copy of a record or extract is supplied, the Access to Health Records Act also permits a charge to be made to cover the cost of making the copy and of any postage.

Factor 8

Mrs. Dunwoody: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will provide funding for the purchase of recombinant factor 8 by haemophiliacs. [39457]

Mr. Horam: The Department does not allocate money to support specific treatments for particular patient groups. National health service funds are allocated to purchasers of health care who are in the best position to decide what services, including treatments, they wish to purchase to meet local needs.
