Play Wales

Mr. Win Griffiths: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what representations he has received concerning Welsh Office financial support for Play Wales; and when he expects to make an announcement concerning a funding decision. [38880]

Mr. Jonathan Evans [holding answer 22 July 1996]: My right hon. Friend has received representations from a wide range of interests about future funding arrangements for Play Wales. He hopes to make an announcement in the near future.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease

Dr. Marek: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales, pursuant to his answer of 4 July, Official Report, column 507, if he will provide a breakdown of cases and suspected cases of CJD by unitary authority area without naming the authorities concerned. [38621]

Mr. Gwilym Jones [holding answer 22 July 1996]: For confidentiality reasons I do not propose to publish any information which could lead to the identification of patients.

Schools (Opting Out)

Mr. Win Griffiths: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales, pursuant to his answer of 8 July, Official Report, column 42, about complaints in respect of opt-out status, what factors made it difficult to provide information without incurring disproportionate costs. [39017]

Mr. Jonathan Evans: A significant number of ballots on grant-maintained status have been accompanied by complaints about the material distributed to parents and the activities of those campaigning in the run-up to the ballot. To provide the details requested would have involved a comprehensive search of a large number of departmental files in order to identify the number of correspondents, the nature of their complaints, and the action taken by officials in respect of any complaints as well as their consideration of the material issued by the school, its local education authority, and third parties.

Small Businesses

Mr. David Shaw: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement on the impact of (a) his

policies and (b) the work of his Department in helping small businesses in the last 12 months as against the previous 12 months; and if he will publish the performance indicators by which his Department monitors the impact and the statistical result of such monitoring. [39180]

Mr. Jonathan Evans: The Government recognise the crucial role played by small firms in the United Kingdom economy and aim to help them by providing sound economic conditions--keeping inflation and interest rates low; reducing legislative, administrative and taxation burdens; and where appropriate providing direct assistance in the form of specialist advice and support and easing access to finance.

Details of Welsh Office policies and programmes to help small firms in the Principality to grow and improve their competitiveness are provided in "Meeting the Challenge--the Competitiveness of Wales" which my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales published on 13 June. A copy is available in the Library of the House.

Public Bodies

Mr. Win Griffiths: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list the last 50 appointments he has made both new and re-appointments to non-departmental public bodies, NHS trusts or other non-elected body which provides services to the public with financial support from his Department. [39015]

Mr. Gwilym Jones: Details are set out in "Appointments by the Secretary of State for Wales", 1 June 1996, which is available in the Library of the House.

Companies (Grants)

Mr. Ieuan Wyn Jones: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how much has been paid in grants out of public funds to (a) Howlett (South-East) Ltd., (b) Guardian Maintenance Ltd. and (c) G. H. Smith (South-East) Ltd., during the last five years, giving the total amount paid and the purposes for which such grants was made. [38266]

Mr. Gwilym Jones: The Welsh Office has not made any payments to the three named companies during the past five years.

Publicity

Ms Hodge: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many staff employed (i) full time and (ii) part time, are budgeted to provide information and publicity in 1996-97. [39381]

Mr. Hague: Twenty-four full time staff.

Child Labour

Mrs. Clwyd: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will adopt the policy of the Scottish Office Education and Industry Department in respect of publication of the responses to his consultation document on school-age children who work. [38672]

Mr. Gwilym Jones: Copies of the replies from organisations in Wales to the consultation document "Employment of Children" is available for inspection in the Welsh Office Library, Cathays park, Cardiff.

Licences

Mr. Steen: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list the licences issued by his Department; for what purpose they are issued; and what are the administrative costs for each. [38684]

School Exclusions and Expulsions

Mr. Dafis: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will publish for the last available three years for each county and for Wales as a whole, the number of school exclusions or expulsions recorded for (a) primary schools, (b) secondary schools and (c) all schools, indicating the percentage of such exclusions or expulsions as a proportion of overall pupil numbers in each case. [38944]

Mr. Jonathan Evans: Information is available in respect of the 1994-95 academic year only. This information, shown in the following table, is derived from an early analysis of the January 1996 schools census. Results for the new unitary authorities are not yet available.

Agency Printing Costs

Mr. Steen: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list the agencies for which his Department is responsible indicating for each the costs incurred for printing (a) all publications and (b) the annual report in the last available year. [38670]

Mr. Hague: Cadw: Welsh Historic Monuments is the only executive agency for which the Welsh Office has sole responsibility. I have asked its chief executive, Mr. T. J. Cassidy, to provide a reply.
