Mr. Moss: The proportion of inhabitants of the Eastern board area registered with GP fundholders on 1 April 1996 was 59 per cent.--421,998 patients. The proportion registered with non-fundholding GPs was 41 per cent. 292,855 patients.
Ms Mowlam: To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what was the total manufacturing investment in Northern Ireland in (a) 1995 and (b) 1979. [4635]
Mr. Ancram: Total manufacturing investment in Northern Ireland, as measured by the net capital expenditure of Northern Ireland manufacturers, amounted to £310.2 million in 1993, the most recent figure available and £127.1 million in 1979.

Mr. Ancram: The number of candidates who took GCSE examinations offered by the Northern Ireland Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment in 1996 was 32,663. Information on the number of Northern Ireland candidates who took examinations boards is not available.

Mr. Moss: The Northern Ireland 1991 census did not include a question on ethnic group. A recent survey by the university of Ulster estimated that there are between 3,125 and 5,125 Chinese, 1,050 Indians, 641 Pakistanis and 1,366 travellers living in Northern Ireland. The social security computer systems do not hold details of ethnicity in relation to the statistics on the unemployed.

report in the Library; and what assessment he has made of the contribution of homework centres to (a) home school support and (b) educational achievement. [5158]
Mr. Ancram: The education and training inspectorate's report was an interim report, not for publication. The inspectorate will conduct a further evaluation of the homework centres during this academic year, which will address, among other things, the contribution of the centres to home-school liaison and the schools' views on the educational progress and achievements of the pupils who attend. This report will be published and I will place a copy in the Library.
