Professors of General Practice

Mr. Chris Smith: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many professors of general practice there were in each of the last five years. [10677]

Mr. Forth: The information requested is not available centrally. I understand that in the 1995-96 academic year there were 23 professors of general practice in post at universities in the UK.

"Going GM" Conference, Warrington

Mr. Hall: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if she will list those organisations (a) invited to attend, (b) who attended the "Going GM" conference for head teachers and governors scheduled to be held in Warrington on 21 October; and what was the total cost to public funds of (i) organising and (ii) running the conference. [10629]

Mr. Forth: Invitations to the "Going GM" conference in Warrington on 21 October 1996 were sent to head teachers and chairmen of governors of all LEA-maintained primary and secondary schools in Cheshire, Knowsley, Liverpool, St. Helens, Sefton, Wirral, Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan and Lancashire; 118 delegates attended the conference, 90 representing primary schools and 28 representing secondary schools.

The conference cost around £3,500 to organise and £10,700 to run on the day.

assessment for Buckinghamshire county council between 1996-97 and 1997-98 relative to that of other local authorities in England. [10699]

Mr. Robin Squire: The provisional education standard spending assessment for Buckinghamshire in 1997-98 represents an underlying increase of 2.6 per cent. compared with the national average increase of 3.4 per cent. The below average increase is mainly due to a marginal reduction in secondary pupil numbers, a reduction in the proportion of children entitled to free school meals, and a reduction in the area cost adjustment. Standard spending assessments will be finalised at the end of the month.

Professors of Practice and Community Nursing

Mr. Chris Smith: To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many professors of (a) practice nursing and (b) community nursing there were in each of the last five years. [10678]

Mr. Forth: The information requested is not available centrally.

[10820]

Mr. Paice: The EC Standing Employment Committee does not issue reports.

SCOTLAND

Mearnskirk Hospital

Mr. Stewart: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what discussions he has had with the Greater Glasgow health board concerning future NHS provision from the site of Mearnskirk hospital; and if he will make a statement. [6890]

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton: Greater Glasgow health board has granted preferred provider status to the Victoria Infirmary NHS trust for the development of 60 care of the elderly beds at Mearnskirk hospital. It is expected that this facility will more than match expected future needs in that sector. Both the board and the trust are keen to seek best value for money and to ensure that the proposed development is of a high standard and provides an environment best suited to providing care.

Mr. Stewart: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland when he expects to reach a decision on the future development of Mearnskirk hospital, Newton Mearns. [6891]

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton: The Victoria Infirmary NHS trust remains on track to open new facilities at Mearnskirk hospital in 1998.

Mr. Stewart: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what discussions he has had with East Renfrewshire council concerning a partnership for the provision of future services from Meanskirk hospital. [6900]

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton: None. Having been granted preferred provider status by Greater Glasgow health board for the development of 60 care of the elderly beds at Mearnskirk hospital, I understand the Victoria Infirmary NHS trust is currently considering how the private finance initiative might contribute to establishing the new unit. Its plans do not involve East Renfrewshire council, and I understand that neither Greater Glasgow health board nor the Victoria Infirmary NHS trust is aware of any discussions with East Renfrewshire council in relation to this development.

Ministerial Leave

Mr. Ian McCartney: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (i) how many days leave he has taken in the Easter, Whitsun and Summer Adjournments; and how many days leave he took during the time in which Parliament was prorogued this year; [9794]

Mr. Michael Forsyth: I refer the hon. Member to the reply given today by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
