Employment (Students)

Dr. Howells: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what percentage of successful full-time higher education students from institutions in Wales other than the University of Wales gained first destination permanent employment in each of the years 1989-90 to 1993-94. [9974]

Mr. Jonathan Evans: The information requested may be found in table 6.10 of the recent Welsh Office publication "Further and Higher Education and Training Statistics in Wales 1996", published in May 1996. A copy of the publication is available in the Library of the House.

Training

Dr. Howells: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what percentage of employees of working age received on-the-job training in Wales, broken down by gender in the most recent year for which figures are available. [9976]

Mr. Gwilym Jones: The spring 1996 labour force survey estimated that, in Wales 8 per cent. of male, 5.5 per cent. of female and 6.8 per cent. of all employees of working age received on-the-job training in the four weeks before the interview. The information for numbers receiving training in a year is not available in the form requested.

Roads

Dr. Howells: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement on planned expenditure on new construction and improvement of roads in Wales for the next year. [9972]

Mr. Gwilym Jones: My right hon. Friend announced our spending plans for 1997-98 on 12 December 1996, Official Report, columns 405-19. These include £113 million for the trunk road and motorway network and £76 million for local roads, including £54 million for transport grant schemes. Details of future improvements to the road network will be published in the Welsh Office's departmental report in the spring.

GCSE Grades

Dr. Howells: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what percentage of school leavers gained GCSE grades A*-C in (a) mathematics, (b) English and (c) science in the most recent year for which figures are available, broken down by gender. [9978]

Mr. Jonathan Evans: Information is not collected centrally on grades achieved in individual GCSE subjects by school leavers. Information relating to pupils aged 15--age as at 31 August 1995--or the academic year 1995-96 is contained in the following table.

Assisted Places

Mr. Flynn: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many pupils in each county in Wales have been included in the assisted places scheme in the last five years; and how many are planned in the next two years. [9850]

Mr. Jonathan Evans: The number of assisted place pupils in Wales in the last five years, in each of the counties within which participating schools are located, is shown in the following table, along with information the number of assisted places planned in the next two years. Information on individual pupils' place of residence is not held centrally.

The table for 1996-97 and beyond reflects local government reorganisation and includes the additional places made available through the expansion of the scheme from September 1996, at a further seven schools across Wales. Planned places for Denbighshire are subject to redistribution should the proposed closure of Howells senior school, Denbigh proceed.

General National Vocational Qualifications

Dr. Howells: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list the percentage of successful GNVQ candidates in Wales who (a) obtained full-time employment, (b) obtained part-time employment, (c) entered further training schemes, (d) continued with further or higher education and (e) became unemployed in (i) 1992-93, (ii) 1993-94 and (iii) 1994-95.
