Devon and Cornwall Constabulary
Mr. Allason:
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the current authorised establishment of the Devon and Cornwall constabulary; and what was it in 1992. [16539]
Mr. Maclean:
It is now for individual chief constables and police authorities to determine the number of officers in a force, having regard to the resources available to them. The Devon and Cornwall constabulary had 2,876 police officers in September 1996 compared to 2,898 in March 1992. The chief constable has estimated that the force will have 2,919 officers by the end of March 1997. Since 1992, the number of constables has increased from 2,197 to 2,248.

Strangers' Cafeteria
Mr. Wigley:
To ask the Chairman of the Catering Committee what is his latest estimate of the cost of refurbishing the Strangers' Cafeteria, including the cost of relocating other facilities in order to make space for the new facilities. [16614]
Mr. Colin Shepherd:
The current forecast of the final cost of modernising the former Members' and Strangers' Cafeterias, including the cost of relocating displaced facilities and building a new kitchen to service both the Terrace Cafeteria and the Members' Tea Room--in line with recommendations made by the Committee in its First Report of Session 1993-94, which was approved by the House on 12 July 1994--is £6.6 million. This figure is significantly less than the estimate agreed by the Committee in October 1994.
EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT
Teachers (Early Retirement)
Mr. Hawkins:
To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what has been the cost to the teachers' superannuation scheme of early retirement on grounds of ill health over the last five years (a) in each local education authority and (b) per teacher in each local education authority. [16100]
Mrs. Gillan:
The following table shows the total cost and cost per teacher from 1990-91 to 1995-96. The costs in each financial year are made up of the lump sum and annual pension paid in respect of new awards of ill health retirement only. The figures cover all members of the teachers' superannuation scheme.
