Parliamentary Questions
Mr. Flynn:
To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many answers to parliamentary questions by Ministers in her Department in the last 12 months have exceeded the advisory cost limit; and if she will make a statement. [19346]
Mr. Robin Squire
[holding answer 10 March 1997]: Where the cost of answering a particular parliamentary question is estimated to exceed £450, it is the general practice for Departments to make clear that the question could be answered only by incurring disproportionate cost. Given the large numbers of questions tabled, it would be unreasonable for the Department to calculate systematically the exact cost of answering every single parliamentary question.
European Social Fund
Mr. MacShane:
To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what funding has been allocated to the United Kingdom under the European social fund for the period 1994 to 1999. [19077]
Mr. Paice
[holding answer 10 March 1997]: The total amount allocated to the United Kingdom from the structural funds over the period 1994 to 1999 is £9,530 million and we expect that £4,344 million of this will be allocated to the European social fund: the precise allocation to the ESF will be known when the current negotiations on the objective 2 programme for 1997-99 have been completed. These figures are based on 1994 prices and an exchange rate of 1.39 ECU to £1.
Pupil to Teacher Ratios
Mr. Callaghan:
To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what was the pupil to teacher ratio in (a) primary and (b) secondary schools in each of the last five years. [19678]
Mr. Robin Squire:
I refer the hon. Member to statistical bulletin 11/96 which shows pupil teacher ratios in maintained schools by local education authority area in England in January 1996. A copy of the bulletin is in the Library.
Primary School Classes
Mr. Blunkett:
To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what is the number and proportion of children in primary school classes or (a) up to 25 pupils, (b) 26-30 pupils, (c) 31-35 pupils, (d) 36-40 pupils and (e) 41 and over pupils (i) in each LEA and (ii) nationally. [19259]
Mr. Robin Squire:
The information requested is shown in the following table.
