EU Countries (Income)

Michael Allcock Case

Mr. Cousins: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many public interest immunity certificates were issued in the case of Inland Revenue v. Michael Allcock. [18855]

Mr. Jack [holding answer 17 March 1997]: No certificates or affidavits claiming public interest immunity were issued in this case, which was a criminal prosecution conducted by the Crown Prosecution Service and not by the Inland Revenue.

Inward Investment

Mr. Jim Cunningham: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what were the levels of overseas investment in (1) the United Kingdom, (2) France and (3) Germany from (i) other EU members and (ii) countries outside the EU for the years 1979 to 1996, (a) in cash terms, (b) as a percentage change on the previous year and (c) as a real figure calculated on 1996 values; [20098]

Mrs. Angela Knight [holding answer 17 March 1997]: Figures for the levels of foreign direct investment of each OECD country, by region and by country of origin, can be found in the OECD International Direct Investment Yearbook which is available in the House of Commons Library.

Landfill Tax

Mr. Nicholas Winterton: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what plans he has to meet representatives of the construction industry to discuss the implementation of landfill tax exemptions for waste from contaminated sites; and if he will make a statement. [20320]

Mr. Oppenheim [holding answer 17 March 1997]: I have no such plans. Officials of HM Customs and Excise will meet representatives of the Building Employers Confederation on 20 March, and will give a full report of their meeting to Treasury Ministers.

Nomura Securities

Mr. Austin-Walker: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what assessment he has made of the possible impact of the current circumstances of Nomura Securities on United Kingdom companies in which it has an interest; and if he will make a statement. [20438]

Investment Income (Tax)

Mr. Pearson: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the average amount of income tax paid on investment income by (a) pensioner and (b) non-pensioner households with annual investment income of (i) less than £50, (ii) £50 to £99, (iii) £100 to £499 and (iv) over £500 for the most recent year for which information is available. [20555]

Mr. Jack: Reliable information on the investment income of households is not available. Information on individual taxpayers' investment income was given in my answer to the hon. Member on 18 February 1997--Official Report, columns 441-42.

Abortion and Maternal Deaths

Mr. Simon Hughes: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many surgical terminations of pregnancy there were in each of the last 15 months for which figures are available; and how many maternal deaths there were in each month. [20150]
