Financial returns and annual accounts of district health authorities, NHS trusts, family health services authorities, the Health Promotion Authority for Wales and the Welsh Health Common Services Authority.

Notes:

1. Information on salaries and wages costs for family health services authorities are not held centrally, and figures for nurses and midwives cannot be disaggregated from administrative and clerical costs.

2. These figures exclude the costs of general practitioners' administrative staff as the information was not separately collected.

3. The latest version of HM Treasury gross domestic product deflators was used to uplift the figures to 1995 prices.

[21355]

Mr. Hague: The Countryside Council for Wales currently employs 176 full-time equivalent scientists--some of them part-timers--all of whom are qualified and/or engaged in ecological and natural science issues. The council will continue to employ suitably qualified staff to carry out its work. There have been no recent redundancies in the council, but eight staff employed on fixed-term contracts for specific work are due to leave in May when their work is completed.

Public Bodies

Mr. Richards: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales when he proposes to notify the economic development non-departmental public bodies in Wales of his strategic guidance for 1997-98; and if he will make a statement. [21651]

Mr. Hague: I have written to the chairmen of the Welsh Development Agency, the Development Board for Rural Wales, Cardiff Bay development corporation, the Land Authority for Wales and the Wales tourist board, to inform them of many strategic targets and priorities for 1997-98. Copies of the letters have been placed in the Library of the House.

The targets I have set are demanding but will lead to private sector investment of over £700 million, the creation of over 10,000 jobs and the establishment of a network of strategic sites for further economic development throughout Wales. The majority of jobs to be created will be in those areas of highest unemployment, including the south Wales valleys and the west.
