Private Finance Initiative

Defence Personnel (Taxation)

Mr. Wigley: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the annual revenue obtained by the Treasury through taxation paid by military and civilian personnel employed by the Ministry of Defence,

broken down into (a) taxation on income associated with their employment and (b) tax revenue arising from VAT and other sales taxes. [20742]

The amount of income tax paid by military and civilian employees, or by my Department on their behalf within the terms of PAYE settlement agreements, was some £1.3 billion in the financial year 1995-96, the latest year for which complete information is available. The amount of VAT and other sales taxes paid by MOD employees is dependent on individual domestic transactions and is thus not available.

HEALTH

NHS Trusts (Chief Executives)

Mr. Simon Hughes: To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many chief executives of hospital trusts were women in each year since 1991. [18708]

Mr. Malone: The information requested is not available centrally.

Networks

Mr. Simon Hughes: To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many separate local area networks and wide area networks are currently in operation within the NHS.[19420]

Medicines Control Agency

Ms Corston: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the total income of the Medicines Control Agency in each of the last three years broken down by each major source indicating separately (a) the direct and (b) the indirect contributions from pharmaceutical companies. [19688]

The fee income was all from pharmaceutical companies and was received directly. Miscellaneous income includes some payments from pharmaceutical companies for the purchase of publications, provision of information, or attendance at seminars; it is not practicable to isolate the precise amounts.
