Notes:

These statistics are generated by analysing the contents of a complex database. Over time, small numbers of inaccuracies present in the records are discovered and action is taken to correct them. As a result of this action, figures can slightly vary at times and consequently can be considered as "estimates".

Data in this table are grossed for both coverage and unknown/invalid clinical data.

Discharged Patients (Emergency Readmission)

Mr. Bayley: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what proportion of patients discharged from a medical specialty in each NHS trust in each of the last three years were subsequently readmitted as an emergency admission to that or another NHS trust within 28 days of discharge (a) as a crude percentage and (b) standardised for age and sex. [20862]

Mr. Horam: The information requested is not available in the form requested and could be obtained only at a disproportionate cost.

Mr. Bayley: To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many children aged under 16 years were discharged from each NHS trust over the last three years following elective removal of tonsils and/or adenoids; and what proportion of the children treated by each trust were readmitted as emergencies between one and 28 days after discharge. [20854]

Mr. Horam: Standard information on hospital admissions and discharges by diagnosis and operative procedure is available in the "Hospital Episodes Statistics" publications, copies of which are available in the Library. The additional information is not available in the form requested and could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

Fractured Neck of Femur Patients

Mr. Bayley: To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many patients were admitted with fractured neck of femur; what percentage survived beyond 30 days of admission for this condition; and what percentage standardised for age and sex survived beyond 30 days of admission for this condition in each acute NHS trust in each of the last three years. [20867]

Mr. Horam: Standard information on hospital admissions by diagnosis is available in the "Hospital Episodes Statistics" publications, copies of which are available in the Library. As to the additional information requested, mortality in hospital after admission for fractured neck of femur is listed in a set of 14 clinical indicators we are preparing to pilot throughout the national health service. It will not be possible to link hospital admissions with deaths in the community after discharge from hospital for the foreseeable future.

Mr. Bayley: To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many patients were admitted from home as emergencies with a principal diagnosis of fractured neck of femur; what percentage of these patients were discharged home within 56 days; and what percentage standardised for age and sex were discharged home within 56 days in each acute NHS trust in each of the last three years. [20868]

Mr. Horam: Standard information on hospital admissions by diagnosis is available in the "Hospital Episodes Statistics" publications, copies of which are in the Library. As to the additional information requested, discharge home after admission for fractured neck of femur is listed in a set of 14 clinical indicators we are preparing to pilot throughout the National Health Service.
