Mr. Bayley: To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many patients were admitted as emergencies from home with a principal diagnosis of stroke over the last three years to each NHS trust; and what proportion of these patients were discharged home within 56 days (a) as a crude percentage and (b) as a percentage standardised for age and sex. [20859]

Mr. Horam: Standard information on hospital admissions by diagnosis is available in the "Hospital Episodes Statistics" publications, copies of which are available in the Library. Length of hospital stay of stroke patients, and discharge home are listed in a set of 14 clinical indicators we are preparing to pilot throughout the national health service as part of a commitment given in the White Paper marking the fifth anniversary of the citizens charter.

Mr. Bayley: To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many patients were admitted as emergencies with a principal diagnosis of stroke as defined by international classification or disease codes 430-34 and 436-38 in the last three years for each NHS trust; and what proportion of these patients (a) survived after 30 days and (b) survived after 30 days after standardisation for age and sex. [20858]

Mr. Horam: Standard information on hospitals admissions by diagnosis is available in the "Hospital Episodes Statistics" publications, copies of which are available in the Library. As to the additional information requested, this calls for the linking of hospital admissions with deaths in the community, something that will not be possible in the foreseeable future.

Mr. Bayley: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what proportion of babies were admitted to a neonatal unit for a period of (a) 48 hours or less and (b) more than 48 hours in each NHS trust in each of the last three years.[20863]

principal diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction; what percentage of these patients survived 30 days after admission; and what proportion standardised for age and sex survived 30 days after admission in each NHS trust in each of the last three years. [20869]

Mr. Horam: Standard information on hospital admissions by diagnosis is available in the "Hospital Episodes Statistics" publications, copies of which are available in the Library. The additional information required is not available at present in the form requested. However, we are preparing to pilot a set of indicators within the national health service, one of which is in-hospital mortality for acute myocardial infarction. It will not be possible to link hospital admissions with deaths in the community after discharge from hospital for the foreseeable future.

Tinnitus Research

Mr. Chris Smith: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what funding his Department is providing for research into tinnitus in the present financial year. [20754]

Mr. Horam: The main agency through which the Government support biomedical and clinical research is the Medical Research Council, which receives its grant-in-aid from the office of my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade. The MRC is always willing to consider high-quality research proposals.

Beta Interferon

Mr. Gordon Prentice: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what factors led (a) Lambeth, (b) Southwark, (c) Lewisham and (d) Cambridge and Huntingdon health authorities not to purchase beta interferon. [20727]

Mr. Horam: Health authorities are responsible, through their purchasing and allocation decisions and the advice and support they give to clinicians, for achieving the best possible health outcomes for their populations within the resources available. We understand that Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham, and Cambridge and Huntingdon health authorities determined their local policies for the purchase of beta-interferon 1b on the basis of assessments of the clinical efficacy and cost-effectiveness of the treatment, and of local health needs, priorities and resources.

Transurethral Prostatectomy Patients

Mr. Bayley: To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many patients aged 55 to 84 years were admitted to each NHS trust over the last three years to undergo transurethral prostatectomy; and what percentage of these patients were readmitted within one year for a further prostatectomy (a) as a crude rate and (b) standardised for age. [20861]

Mr. Horam: Standard information on hospital admissions by diagnosis and operative procedure is available in the "Hospital Episodes Statistics" publications, copies of which are available in the Library. Mr. Gordon Prentice: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what estimate he has made of the number of people with relapsing/remitting MS in the area covered by the Cambridge and Huntingdon health authority.[20729]

Mr. Horam: The information requested is not collected centrally. The hon. Member may wish to contact Mrs. Margaret Scott, chairman of Cambridge and Huntingdon health authority, for an estimate of the local position.

Commercial Food Premises (Rat Infestations)

Ms Walley: To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many rat infestations in commercial food premises have been recorded in each of the past five years; and if he will make a statement. [20927]

Mr. Horam: This information is not held centrally. However, the results of a 1993 survey, the most recent since the mid to late 1970s, showed that there had been a fall in the levels of both mouse and rat infestations in business premises with food-related uses. These results were published in a Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food news release on 6 June 1995.

Tobacco Products

Mr. Key: To ask the Secretary of State for Health what arrangements he has put in place to control and monitor additives in tobacco products; and if he will make a statement. [21262]

Mr. Horam: A new 10 year voluntary agreement between the Tobacco Manufacturers Association, the Imported Tobacco Products Advisory Council and the Department of Health has been successfully negotiated and will come into force shortly. The new agreement covers the additives which may now be included in tobacco products and arrangements for the approval by the Department of Health of new additives in the future. Manufacturers have undertaken to sign a certificate that their products conform to the terms of the agreement one year from the date it comes into effect. Current arrangements for monitoring the constituents of tobacco products and their smoke by the Laboratory of the Government Chemist remain in place. Copies of the text of the agreement have been placed in the Library.
