Select Committee on European Legislation Fourth Report

THE INFORMATION SOCIETY: NEW POLICY PRIORITIES

10.   We have given further consideration to the following on the basis of further information from the Government. We maintain our opinion[21] that it raises questions of political importance. We now make no recommendation for its further consideration, but suggest it would be relevant to the debate we have recommended on the Information Society (17467) 9795/96[22]:--

10603/96
Draft Council Resolution on new policy priorities for the information society.
Legal base: None required, but the Resolution is to be adopted on the basis of unanimity.

      The document

10.1  This draft Council Resolution records progress on the development of a policy framework for the Information Society, proposes further lines of action and urges Member States to ensure that the pace of progress is maintained. It was agreed unanimously at the 8 October Telecommunications Council. When we considered it on 30 October no text was available. This has now been forwarded to us by the Government.

        Conclusion

10.2  We thank the Government for providing us with the text of the Resolution and now clear the document from scrutiny. We suggest that it would be relevant to the debate we have previously recommended on the Information Society.
