FORTHCOMING BUSINESS OF THE HOUSE OF LORDS

THE STATE OPENING OF PARLIAMENT WILL TAKE PLACE ON WEDNESDAY 23 OCTOBER 1996

H.M. The Queen will leave Buckingham Palace at 11.00am and will arrive at the Sovereign's Entrance, House of Lords, at 11.15am. At 11.27am she will proceed to the House of Lords' Chamber via the Royal Gallery to give her Speech to the assembled Houses of Parliament.

It is expected that Her Majesty will leave the House of Lords for the return journey to Buckingham Palace between 12.25pm and 12.30pm.

The House of Lords' galleries are closed to the public during the State Opening of Parliament, but the proceedings are being broadcast live by the BBC. The procession can be viewed along most of its route from Buckingham Palace to the Houses of Parliament, although some areas in the immediate vicinity of the House of Lords are closed to the public.

The Strangers' Gallery will be open to the public at 3.30pm for the afternoon's proceedings.

The House will sit at 3.30pm for public business.

Debate - Debate on the Address (the Motion for an Humble Address to the Queen in reply to her Speech will be moved and seconded and the debate will then be adjourned).


THURSDAY 24 OCTOBER (3.00pm)

Debate - Debate on the Address (1st day). The debate will concentrate on law, home and social affairs.


PROVISIONAL FUTURE BUSINESS

MONDAY 28 OCTOBER

Debate - Debate on the Address (2nd day). The debate will concentrate on foreign affairs, overseas aid and defence.


TUESDAY 29 OCTOBER

Debate - Debate on the Address (3rd day). The debate will concentrate on environment, agriculture, local government and education.


WEDNESDAY 30 OCTOBER

Debate - Debate on the Address (4th day). The debate will concentrate on industry and economic affairs.


THURSDAY 31 OCTOBER

Legislation - Channel Tunnel Rail Link Bill (Committee on Re-commitment - if brought from the Commons).

Delegated Legislation - Open-ended Investment Companies (Investment Companies with Variable Capital) Regulations - Motion for Approval.
