MODERNISATION OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS |
| Mrs Ann Taylor
That this House approves the Third and Fourth Reports from the Select Committee on Modernisation of the House of Commons on Carry-over of Public Bills and Conduct in the Chamber (HC 543 and 600). |
| As an Amendment to Mrs Ann Taylor's proposed Motion (Modernisation of the House of Commons): |
| Mr Andrew F. Bennett
Line 3, at end add `save for those recommendations relating to the raising of points of order during divisions, because it is illogical to get rid of the top hat to indicate that an honourable Member wishes to raise a point of order during a division, without getting rid of all the other fancy dress in the Chamber; calls on the Select Committee on the Modernisation of the House of Commons to modernise all the dress in the Chamber, not just the top hat, and in particular suggests that the role of the Speaker and her deputies should be signified by where they sit, rather than what they wear, that there should be no need for the Clerks at the Table or the Serjeant at Arms to have to wear special clothes, since again their role can be signified by where they sit; and, whilst accepting that for the door keepers and badge messengers the case is rather different, believes that a more modern dress for them would also be appropriate.'. |
