  PART III
  SUPPLEMENTAL
Interpretation.     19. - (1) In this Act-
 
 
    "authority" means a local education authority;
 
    "agricultural work" shall be construed in accordance with the definition of "agriculture" in section 329(1) of the Highways Act 1980;
 
    "certificate of fitness" means a certificate issued under section 11 of this Act;
 
    "child" means a person who is not yet over compulsory school age;
 
    "clerical work" has the meaning given in section 1(2)(c) of the Offices, Shops and Railway Premises Act 1963;
 
    "employer" means any person for whom a child undertakes any work, and "employment" shall be construed accordingly;
 
    "factory" has the meaning given in section 175 of the Factories Act 1961;
 
    "indecent matter" means anything to which section 1 of the Indecent Displays (Control) Act 1981 applies;
 
    "hairdressing" has the meaning given in section 15 of the Hairdressers (Registration) Act 1964 and "hairdressing establishment" shall be construed accordingly;
 
    "home-school agreement" has the meaning given in section 98(2) of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998;
 
    "notification of intention" means notification given to a relevant authority under section 12(1);
 
    "office premises" has the meaning given in section 1(2)(a) of the Offices, Shops and Railway Premises Act 1963;
 
    "parent" includes any person who has parental responsibility within the meaning of section 3 of the Children Act 1989 or a guardian appointed under section 5 of that Act and "parents" may include one or both parents;
 
    "parental declaration" has the meaning given in section 98(2) of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998;
 
    "relevant authority", in relation to a child, means the local education authority in whose area the child's school is situated;
 
    "sex article" has the meaning given in paragraph 4 of Schedule 3 to the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982;
 
    "term-time" in relation to a child means his own school's term time or, in relation to a child not attending school, the term times of the school which he would be eligible to attend which is nearest to his home;
 
    "work" means any tasks, duties or other work undertaken by virtue of a contract, whether express or implied and (if express) whether orally or in writing, in connection with a trade or occupation carried on for profit, whether or not the person undertaking the work receives any reward for his labour.
      (2) For the purposes of sections 1, 2 and 3 of this Act, where a child works for more than one employer, working time shall be cumulative.
 
Minor and consequential repeals.     20. The repeals in Schedule 2 to this Act shall have effect.
 
Short title, commencement and extent.     21. - (1) This Act may be cited as the Employment of Children Act 1998.
 
      (2) This Act shall come into force at the end of the period of one year beginning on the day on which it is passed.
