Public Records (Amendment) Bill
1.Access to public records.
2.Access to records relating to the Sovereign and the Sovereign's family.





Improve public access to public records, including records relating to the Sovereign and the Sovereign's family; and for related purposes.

BE IT ENACTED by the Queen's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:-

Access to public records.     1. In section 5(1) of the Public Records Act 1958 ("the 1958 Act"), for the word "thirty" there shall be substituted the word "twenty".
Access to records relating to the Sovereign and the Sovereign's family.     2. - (1) Paragraph 2(1) of the First Schedule to the 1958 Act shall be amended as follows.
      (2) The words "administrative and departmental" shall be omitted.
      (3) In sub-paragraph (1)(a), the word "or" shall be omitted in the second place in which it occurs.
      (4) after sub-paragraph (1)(b) there shall be inserted the following-
    "(c) records relating to the work of Her Majesty in her capacity as Head of State or Defender of the Faith,
    (d) records relating to the management of the private estates of Her Majesty, her heirs or successors, or
    (e) any code of instructions prepared by the Treasury under section 9 of the Civil List Audit Act 1816 and any statement delivered to the Treasury under section 12 of that Act,"
Citation.     3. This Act may be cited as the Public Records (Amendment) Act 1998.
