Mr. Ron Davies: The cost was under £164,000.

Mr. Evans: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what was the net cost of producing the White Paper on the Government's proposals for a Welsh Assembly. [12717]

Mr. Davies: The net cost was £77,480.

Mr. Evans: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many civil servants currently work in the Welsh Office; and how many he estimates will work in the Welsh Office after the implementation of his devolution proposals. [12689]

Mr. Davies: The Welsh Office currently employs 2,224 full-time equivalent staff. This figures includes 140 casual staff.

Goods and Services (Payments)

Mr. Todd: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list each of the functions relating to payment for goods or services supplied for which his Department is responsible indicating the management systems purchased, all subcontractors involved in the work, co-operative arrangements with other Departments; and the costs of the systems and processes in the last year for which figures are available. [12568]

Mr. Ron Davies: The functions of the Welsh Office for which payments are made are set out in the Department's supply estimates and appropriation accounts--class XIV, votes 1 to 5. Payments for all functions are handled centrally and the cost of the central finance payment processing for 1996-97 is estimated at £492,000.

MRSA and Tuberculosis

Mr. Flynn: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many cases of (a) Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus and (b) tuberculosis have been recorded in each health authority district in Wales in each month since April 1997. [12910]

Mr. Win Griffiths: The information is given in the following table:

(22)Data for recent months are provisional.

(23)Patients identified with MRSA (ethicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus); only a proportion of these will have clinical illness. Screening and reporting practices may differ from hospital to hospital. The date is the date specimen was received by the hospital. The health authority is the area of residence of the patient or area of reporting laboratory if area of residence of patient is not known.

Performing Arts (Welsh Language)

Mr. Flynn: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what plans he has to promote the use of the Welsh language in the performing arts; and if he will make a statement. [12914]

Mr. Ron Davies: I am pleased that both the Arts Council of Wales and the Welsh Language Board support productions in Welsh--the Arts Council of Wales through its drama programmes, community touring scheme and

other activities; the Welsh Language Board through support for the national eisteddfod of Wales and the Urdd national eisteddfod.

Health Trusts (Deficits)

Mr. Rowlands: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what estimate he has made of (a) the current deficits and (b) the projected deficits of each health trust as a percentage of their budgets; and if he will make a statement. [12963]

27 Oct 1997 : Column: 703

Mr. Win Griffiths: As at August 1997, the following trusts were reporting either a current and/or projected end of year deficit position(s):

Current £000sProjected £000s
Carmarthen(441)(1,659)
Ceredigion(414)(1,401)
East Glamorgan(142)(342)

Pembs/Derwen(1,122)(2.697)
Powys(646)(1,403)
UHW Healthcare(954)(6,000)
Wrexham(715)(737)

The position of some trusts may improve as contract negotiations are completed, and these deficits project worse case scenarios. My officials are in discussion with trusts to ensure that these problems are being dealt with.

It is not possible to provide the figures as a percentage of their budget, as most trusts have not yet reached contract agreement with all their purchasers.

Transplants

Mr. Flynn: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales (1) how many (a) kidney, (b) heart, (c) lung, (d) heart and lung, (e) liver and (f) other transplants have been carried out in Wales in each of the last 10 years, broken down into health authority district; and if he will make a statement; [12912]

Mr. Win Griffiths: Information on the number of transplants performed on Welsh residents by area of residence is not readily available. The number of transplants carried out in Wales as a whole is shown in the following table. Transplants of organs not listed in the table are not carried out in Wales. It should be noted that kidney transplants for residents of north Wales are normally carried out in Liverpool. No data are available centrally concerning artificial organ transplants.

Organ Donors

Mr. Flynn: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will estimate how many and what percentage of people in Wales (i) carry a donor card and (ii) are registered on the NHS organ donor register. [12911]

Mr. Win Griffiths: The number of people carrying organ donor cards is not known centrally. There were 390 thousand Welsh residents on the NHS organ donor register at 18 October 1997, about 13 per cent. of the population.

Health Authorities (Finance)

Mr. Rowlands: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what estimate he has made of (a) the running costs of and (b) the remuneration paid by each health authority in Wales in the current financial year. [12964]

Mr. Win Griffiths: This information is not presently available.

Health authorities' costs and the remuneration paid to their chairmen, non-executive and executive directors in 1996-97 were as shown in the following table:
