Nursing Homes

Mr. Burstow: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if his Department's plans for all inspection reports for nursing homes to be made available to the public will include reports of inspections that have already been carried out. [15182]

Mr. Boateng: No. From 1 April 1998 all nursing home inspection reports carried out after that date will be available to the public. In some areas inspection reports are already made available to the public with the agreement of nursing home proprietors. We will consider what further action might be taken within the existing legal framework to allow access to past reports.

Provider based information, which has been available since prior to 1992 and from which regional figures can be obtained, is contained in "Hospital Waiting List Statistics: England". Both these publications are produced on a quarterly basis and copies are available in the Library.

Mr. Sanders: To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) if he will list the distance from spending target of each NHS trust in (a) Cornwall and (b) Devon in each year since 1992 for which figures are available. [15472]

Figures for earlier years will be placed in the Library shortly. Community Hospitals

Mr. Matthew Taylor: To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) if he will list by health authority the number of community hospitals in (a) Cornwall and (b) Devon in each year since 1979 for which figures are available; [15529]

Mr. Boateng: Information about the number of community hospitals in England is not collected in central returns. However the Department of Health is providing a grant to the Community Hospitals Association to update its directory of community hospitals.

Information available from the three health authorities in Devon and Cornwall shows that the total number of community hospitals in each health authority in 1997 is as follows:

Information on earlier years is not readily available.

Mr. Andrew George: To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) what was the total spending on community hospitals in England in each year since 1979 for which figures are available; [15468]

Mr. Milburn: Financial information is collected on the basis of National Health Service trusts. Information is not therefore available about individual hospitals. Health authorities commission community health services from a wide variety of NHS trusts. Central information about this cannot be disaggregated by NHS trust or individual hospital.
