Monday 22nd December 1997.

The House met at half-past Two o'clock.

PRAYERS.

1School Standards and Framework Bill,—The Order of the day being read, for the Second Reading of the School Standards and Framework Bill;

And a Motion being made, and the Question being put, That the Bill be now read a second time;

The House divided.

Tellers for the Ayes, Mr Graham Allen, Mr David Jamieson: 265.

Tellers for the Noes, Mr John M. Taylor, Sir David Madel: 142.

So the Question was agreed to.

The Bill was accordingly read a second time and stood committed to a Standing Committee.

2School Standards and Framework Bill [Money],—Her Majesty's Recommendation having been signified to the proposed Motion relating to School Standards and Framework Bill [Money];

A Motion was made, and the Question being put forthwith, pursuant to Standing Order No. 52 (Money resolutions and ways and means resolutions in connection with Bills), That, for the purposes of any Act resulting from the School Standards and Framework Bill, it is expedient to authorise—

(1) the payment out of money provided by Parliament of—

(a) any sums required for the making by the Secretary of State of grants or loans under the Act;

(b) any other expenses of the Secretary of State under the Act; and

(c) any increase attributable to the Act in the sums so payable by virtue of any other Act; and

(2) the payment of sums into the Consolidated Fund.—(Mr Jim Dowd):—It was agreed to.

3Adjournment,—A Motion was made, and the Question being proposed, That this House do now adjourn—(Mr Jim Dowd);

And the Motion having been made after Ten o'clock, and the Debate having continued for half an hour, the Deputy Speaker adjourned the House without Question put, pursuant to Standing Order, it being then nineteen minutes to Eleven o'clock, till Monday 12th January, pursuant to Resolution [15th December].
