Select Committee on Agriculture Sixth Report

APPENDIX 27

Memorandum submitted by Lincolnshire Drainage Boards (F40)

In response to the Committee's request for evidence in connection with the above Inquiry, representatives of Lincolnshire Drainage Boards met to consider an appropriate submission.

Lincolnshire is heavily dependent upon flood and coastal defences to protect the industrial sector in the north, the tourism industry along the east coast, the commercial sectors within the County and the high-grade agricultural land around the Wash and Fens. Lincolnshire Drainage Boards protect 212,829 hectares within the county, which incorporates 21,542 hectares (83.17 square miles) of industrial, commercial or residential properties. The protection afforded by the Boards activities contributes towards the sustainability of the infrastructure of the County's communications networks, whilst the water level management systems ensure the continued existence and enhancement of a number of diverse sites of nature conservation and special scientific interest.

The Boards' representatives totally endorsed the submission of the Association of Drainage Authorities and would welcome the opportunity to assist the Select Committee with any further evidence which may be required.

The Boards would extend a warm welcome should the Agriculture Committee wish to visit the area and inspect the diversity and extent of the Boards' activities.
