Select Committee on Agriculture Sixth Report

APPENDIX 28

Letter from the Executive Director (Environment), Shepway District Council (F41)

I am writing to inform you that Shepway District Council, at its meeting on 8 April 1998, formally resolved, Minute 79, to support the concerns raised by the Local Government Association in response to possible changes in the method of delivery of the Flood and Coastal Defence Progamme via a national agency and to bring these to the attention of Government, specifically:—

"The proposals would mean a substantial weakening in local authorities' roles and an unsatisfactory input into delivering agreed regional programmes; a non-elected agency would be responsible for works currently carried out by local authorities; the consistency in delivery of flood and coastal programmes alongside spending programmes such as tourism, leisure and roads would be lost; although some authorities were seeking to reduce their input into flood defence, maritime local authorities retained their strong and active interest in their coastal protection role.

Additionally, concerns to the local authority would include the efficient and effective maintenance of our investments in coast protection locally."

I trust you will note the concerns of Shepway District Council when considering this matter further.
