Contributions to the Local Government Management
Board.
Provision of £47,000 is included for the
payment of contributions to the Local Government Management Board
(LGMB). This expenditure covers half the cost of the operation
by the LGMB of the joint staffing watch to provide information
required by central government departments and local authorities
on local authority staff numbers in England and Wales. The remaining
costs are borne by local authorities. These payments are not at
present covered by specific legislation and the power to make
them rests on the authority of the Estimates and the Appropriation
Acts. The Department intends to put these payments on a statutory
footing at the earliest suitable legislative opportunity.
