Select Committee on Health First Report

Appendix 24

Supplementary memorandum by the Catholic Child Welfare Council

Welfare of Former Child Migrants (CM 107C)
Further to the oral evidence session of the above Inquiry held on Thursday, 16 July, and to the transcript sent to me which I now return, I ask you to bring the following to the attention of the Committee:We believe that some of the statements made within questions put by committee members contained factual inaccuracies which, in our opinion, could not be properly substantiated. We hope that statements and allegations made in the Committee's final Report will be backed up by suitable supporting references and sources. In particular can we refer the Committee to the second part of question 337 on page 26 starting at line 11. We know of no section of the Catholic Church nor any Catholic agency or organisation in Britain or Australia which makes its help to former child migrants conditional on signing a disclaimer or entering into any kind of agreement not to sue. In particular, CBERS has made public statements to the effect that its services are open to all former Christian Brothers residents and are delivered without prejudice. If the Committee has evidence of any Catholic organisation which acts in this way, we would be most grateful to receive the details from you. If, on the other hand, there is no such evidence could the transcript be suitably annotated to show that.We appreciate the work that the committee has put into this Inquiry and look forward to the production of its Report.
