Select Committee on Health First Report

Appendix 26

Letter from the Parliamentary Clerk, Department of Health to the Clerk of the Committee

Former Child Migration—UK Financial Support for

the maintenance of children in the receiving country (CM 129B)I regret that at the oral evidence sessions last night David Matthews made a mistake when asked about financial assistance from the UK towards maintenance of children in the receiving country. As Mrs Wise indicated there was such financial assistance. In fact, the Department of Health's Memorandum to the Committee—page 52, paragraph 9 (an extract from the Moss Report), and paragraph 3 on page 56 (an extract from the Ross Report)—drew attention to these arrangements. Please could you draw this correction to the Committee's attention. The former Home Office files that we have looked at contain only a few references to such payments. We guess that there must be some other files that contain details of such expenditure but not know where they are.The Ross Report notes that in 1956: "The expenditure of the UK Government on the maintenance of children in Australia runs now to just over £40,000 a year." This was stated in our Memorandum to the Committee on page 56, paragraph 3.Once again, apologies for the inaccuracy.
