World Food Programme: Sudan Daily Bulletin, 9 July 1998

1. Airdrops ex-El Obeid—(into Southern Sector)—A total of 17.1 Mts of food commodities was delivered from El Obeid into Baar—Bahr El Ghazal—on 8 July.

2. Airdrops/Airlifts Ex-Lokichokio—On 8 July a total of 11 C-130 rotations were carried out by the three C-130 aircraft presently operating ex-Lokichokio. In addition, three rotations were conducted one Buffalo aircraft. Commodities were delivered as follows:

Lokutok (EQU) 28.8 Mts Cereals 4.5 Mts Pulses
Pakor (BEG) 16.2 Mts Cereals

Total 178.4 Mts.

3. General Food Distribution in Wau—Bahr El Ghazal—WFP registered 892 new arrivals to Wau on 8 July (309 children under five), bringing the total beneficiary caseload up to 45,250 people. The general food distribution continues. A total of 95 Mts of food commodities was distributed to 7,481 IDPs and returnees on 8 July. Total quantities of food distributed in Wau from 1 to 8 July are 271 Mts sorghum, 19 Mts pulses, 7 Mts vegetable oil and 0.3 Mts DSM.

4. Southern Sector Staff in Southern Sudan—WFP Southern Sector has 25 field staff positioned in 12 locations in Bahr El Ghazal, Western Upper Nile, Equatoria and Jonglei.

5. Leer—A joint OLS assessment will start in Leer—Western Upper Nile—on 10 July.

6. Opening of Lokichokio/Sudan Road—The road from Lokichokio into Sudan will be opened on Saturday, providing the security arrangements agreed upon by the Sudanese and Kenyan authorities are met.

7. Juba Barge Convoy—Loading of the Juba barge convoy continues. The Barge departure date has been delayed by three days while one pusher engine is repaired in Khartoum by the Government's River Transport Corporation (RTC), which owns the pushers. The engine is expected to be fitted back into the pusher in Kosti on 11 July. The convoy is therefore now expected to depart from Kosti on 15 July.

8. Operational Aircraft/8 July—Four C-130 aircraft (3 in Lokichokio and 1 in El Obeid) and three Buffalo aircraft are presently operational in delivering relief food items into Southern Sudan. The C-130 being repaired in Lokichokio returned to El Obeid on 8 July in the morning and airdropped 17.1 Mts in Baar in the afternoon.

9. Missing UN staff—Information on UN missing staff is still being awaited.
