Dr Peter J Lewis

Fax 011-44-1865

  Dear Peter

I have been absolutely astounded with the recent allegations by Andy Millar that you had been aware of unblinded results from the USA Zacutex (R) phase III trials as far back as the end of 1996. For the record, I would like to state that as President of British Biotech Inc, the USA operating arm of the company that has responsibility for running this trial, at no time did you ever indicate to me that you ever had any knowledge of the results, ie unblinded, of this trial.

As you were the Oxford executive responsible for British Biotech Inc in Annapolis, you and I had frequent conversations about the US clinical trials and the operations of the company in general. As my then supervisor (and friend and colleague over a 15 year period) we certainly shared a number of candid observations about the company as a whole, its future, and its problems, serious and not so serious. However, at no time did you ever give me the slightest indication that you had any idea of the results of the phase III Zacutex (R) trial.

Our relationship with each other has been fairly close, and frankly, if you had been aware of any of this confidential data or that Dr Millar had been unblinding this study, I am sure that you would have given me some inkling of what was going on.

I will state categorically that you never, ever gave me the slightest indication that you had any knowledge of these results whatsoever, and I am certainly prepared to go on record to this effect.

  Yours sincerely

Peter P McCann, PhD, President
