Select Committee on Standards and Privileges First Report

APPENDIX 76

Statement to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards by Elizabeth Swindin

My name is Elizabeth Swindin, of 144 Sutherland Avenue, London W9 1HP.

I was employed by Ian Greer Associates for a period of 9½ years from 1987 to October 1996, when I was made redundant. During the whole of that period, I was Mr Ian Greer's private secretary.

My responsibilities included the opening of mail marked for Mr Greer's attention, the placing of a large proportion of his telephone calls, and speaking to the secretaries of the Chairmen and Chief Executives of company clients.

In the course of my duties, I have spoken from time to time, to Ms Iris Bond, Ms Alison Bosek, and Mr Royston Webb's secretary. On no occasion have I ever left messages, with any client, requesting payment of moneys owing to either the company or to Mr Greer, at any time. Financial/accounting matters were dealt with directly by Mr Greer or his Managing Director, Mr Andrew Smith, on a one to one basis with the client Chairman or Chief Executive. I have never left messages with Mr Fayed's office requesting payment of moneys owing.

Any deliveries made to the office marked for Mr Greer's attention, would have been given to me by the company's receptionist. On no occasion have I ever received, opened or witnessed any envelopes containing cash from either Mr Fayed's office, or indeed, from any other client.

Elizabeth Swindin
